Nora opened her mouth, but the words caught in her throat.

There were some things she simply couldn't bring herself to explain.

And no one here could possibly understand her agony anyway.

Lydia pressed her advantage.

"If you don't want to help Yancey because you don't share the same mother, fine, I get it. But what about your father? Thanks to his connection as York's father-in-law, he finally landed an incredibly lucrative project! He's been pulling all-nighters working on the proposals, skipping meals just to get it done. If you get a divorce now, what happens to him? Are you really heartless enough to watch all his hard work go up in flames?"

Nora looked at Marcus, suddenly noticing the heavy, dark circles under his eyes and the unmistakable signs of deep exhaustion etching his face.

A wave of utter helplessness washed over her. She dug her nails into her palms and asked quietly.

"How long until this project is finalized?"

"About another week," Marcus replied. "But if you—"

He was about to continue, but Lydia pinched his arm sharply. When he glanced at her, she shot him a frantic, warning glare.

Helpless, he swallowed the rest of his words.

Nora understood exactly how hard things were for him.

"We'll talk about this again after your project is done," she said softly.

Back at the villa, Nora went about her usual routine of watering the plants in the backyard.

Her eyes were glazed over, her expression hollow, as she went through the motions entirely on autopilot.

A week was plenty of time to figure out how to navigate her marriage with York and what to do about the baby growing inside her.

Maybe when York got home tonight, she could test the waters and gauge his stance.

About a divorce, and about children.

She needed to hear exactly what he was thinking.

Finishing the watering, Nora noted that it was almost time for York to get off work, so she headed to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

York was fiercely territorial and absolutely despised having outsiders in their home.

Aside from a cleaner who came periodically for deep cleaning, she had always handled all the daily household chores herself.

He was a picky eater who suffered from chronic stomach issues. Just to make sure he ate foods that were soothing for his digestion, Nora had spent the last three years perfecting her culinary skills.
