Chapter 216

cilia’s POV

My body shuddered at the sight; the smell of blood was potent. The guard who attacked me was scratched to pieces, barely any part of him left, but there was no doubt in my mind that it was him.

Being in his presence again, Lora felt uneasy… even if he was dead.

My attention returned to Leopold when I heard a soft whimper; he was still sitting on the ground, his face buried in his lap and his fingers draped in his hair, tugging at it like he was in complete agony.

Landon had shut the door to the office, leaving us alone.

With a racing heart, I knelt beside him, my hand shaking slightly as I placed it on his shoulder. He tensed at my touch, but he didn’t make any movements. I could hear Warren’s deep breaths within Leopold’s mind; he was angry and simmering, and it was directed at Leopold.

“Made her hate us. Your fault.”

I couldn’t help but wonder who he was talking about.

“Hey,” I said softly, my voice coming out barely above a whisper. “Look at me…

He didn’t make any movements, just a soft whimper escaping his lips. He was in pain, and it was obvious; he was trying hard to keep himself under control, but Warren was strong and seconds away from taking over again. I wondered for a moment if it was Warren or Leopold who killed that man.

I tried to brush the thought out of my head, though.

“Pain…” Lora said softly. “Wolf in pain.”

She was right; Warren was experiencing this pain, and he wasn’t thinking straight. My heart cracked open at the thought. I wanted to protect him from whatever was happening, but after our last argument, I knew I had no right to do so. I almost stood and left the study, but I also knew Landon would force me to return and finish this job.

Taking a deep breath, I held it and then released it before I did something unthinkable.

I cupped Leopold’s face with my hands. His entire body stilled for more than a heartbeat, and when he lifted his head to look at me, I saw the tears clinging to his lashes. The haunted look in his eyes was nearly my undoing.

“Fight it,” I tell him, my voice way more controlled than I felt. “You have to fight it.

His breathing came out in short, ragged gasps.

“You… hate us…” Warren breathed. “Because of him…”

My heart stuttered in my chest. Was he talking about me? This whole time… he was talking about me?

“I don’t hate you,” I whispered. “I could never hate you…’

“You… abandoned us… abandoned me…”

Tears stung the back of my eyes as I held onto his head a little tighter, grounding myself and hoping that I was grounding him as well.

“It’s not your fault,” I tell him. “It’s not his fault either. Please, believe me, Warren. Release your control… let him go.”

He stared at me for a long while; the gold swirling in his eyes indicating that Warren was still very much in control.

“Please…” I whispered, my tone shaking slightly.

Leopold blinked, and when he opened his eyes again, they had returned to their normal color. I let out a breath of relief, a small smile tipping the corner of my lips.

“Welcome back, Your Majesty,” I tell him softly.

He stared at me for an impossibly long while, as if he was trying to figure me out… and trying to figure out what was going on. But then he moved away from me so fast, my hands fell from his face, and I nearly staggered backward.

“Why are you here?” He asked as he stood, his tone sharp.

I blinked a few times, confused by the sudden movement and actions, but I quickly stood and brushed the imaginary dirt off my dress.

“I was brought here by Landon to calm you down,” I tell him.

“I told him not to go get you,” Leopold said through his teeth. “So now my own butler is going against my wishes. Did you put him up to that?”
