Chapter 257
Cecilia’s POV
“I was just leaving,” I said, my voice composed as I turned away from the ballroom doors and faced Diana.
I steeled my expression, not giving her an ounce of emotion.
She raised her brows, folding her arms across her chest.
“Probably for the best,” she said. “It’s better if you just stayed away from the King and the future queen. I’m assuming you won’t be joining us for dinner this evening after all.”
“You’ve assumed correctly,” I say flatly. “I’m sure the King will understand my absence. Give him and Sophia my best, won’t you?”
The corner of her lips curved.
“Yes, I’m sure he will,” she murmured. “I’m sure he probably won’t even notice. Have you seen how happy he and my darling daughter are? A match truly made by the goddess herself.”
I swallowed that tight lump in my throat, but I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of a reaction.
“I have,” I tell her, keeping my tone clipped. “If you’ll excuse me.”
I don’t bother waiting for a reply; I continue down the corridor, my movements controlled, and my hands clenched into fists. I could hear her light laughter coming from down the hall, and it infuriated me. I needed to get some air; I needed to go outside and forget about this entire mess.
Lora was quiet, which wasn’t surprising. She was disappointed that once again, our mate slipped right through our fingers.
I heard a door opening and light footsteps sounded around the corner. I paused when I spotted Cora standing there; her eyes found mine, and they widened.
“You’re back,” she breathed as she made her way toward me. “I was just using the restroom. Are you alright? You gave everyone quite a scare.”
“I’m fine,” I told her, hating how cold I was sounding to my friend.
She flinched at my harsh tone, and I immediately wished that I could take it back.
“Sorry,” I murmured, letting out a breath. “I’m just tired. I need to get some air.”
“It’s okay. I understand,” she said quickly. “If you need to talk to anyone, you know I’m here. As are the other girls. Do you plan to return to the ceremony?”
“I don’t think I have it in me,” I told her. “But maybe we can meet up tomorrow for brunch?”
She gave me a small smile.
“Sounds great,” she told me. She put a hand on my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Go get some rest. I’ll let the others know that you’re okay.”
I nodded my thanks to her as I brushed past her and towards the back doorway that led into the garden area. Maids were bustling around, preparing for the wedding that was going to take place in only a few days’ time.
It seemed like an eternity away, and yet it was only around the corner. In just a few days, I would be set free from

this palace, and I could truly find a way to protect this baby.
Me maids barely spared me a glance as I walked by. They were too busy preparing for the wedding and making sure everything was perfect. The wedding was going to be outside, and everything was to Sophia’s liking, minus the red irises.
It was smart of them to opt out of those flowers, knowing that Warren would lose his mind the moment he saw them.
Suddenly, I felt something internal surfacing, and my breath caught. I swear, I could smell my mate all over again. It was strong, just like it had been when I was nearing the ballroom, but I knew that the moment I went towards it, it would just disappear again.
