Chapter 258

ontinued through the gardens, reaching the northern gates that led into the forest lines. There was something about the forest that always seemed to calm me; I rarely got to travel far into the forest because the guards were always blocking off the gates. But right now, the guards seemed to be preoccupied with other things… uke preparing for the royal wedding.

None of them noticed me slipping through the cracks and leaving the palace grounds. I took off my shoes so I could truly feel the dirt beneath my toes and be one with the earth.

I took a deep breath as I went deeper into the forest.

I tried to call for Lora to surface; even if I couldn’t fully shift, I wanted her at least close to the edge so we could enjoy this together and I could be close to her. I missed the feeling of her being close; it seemed she was only there when either my mate was nearby or Leopold.

However, at the moment, Lora kept burying herself even further in my mind, refusing to partake in any of this.

Her silence was eerie and left a sense of dread in the pit of my stomach.

I hated how weak and quiet she was being.

I just wanted things to go back to normal.

I pressed my hands to my flat belly; my fingers trembling slightly. I was pregnant with Leopold’s baby, and Leopold was about to marry someone else. This was the downfall of my life right now. I had been acting strong for the last several hours, and now the exhaustion of it weighed on me.

For once, I allowed my body to sag and the tears that desperately wanted to spill from my eyes to surface. My vision blurred from those unshed tears.

The forest was quiet, a vast difference from the chaos in the palace right now. I invited the quiet, allowing the soft breeze to soothe my aching bones and my wandering mind, hoping for it to ease some of this tension.

I leaned against a large oak tree, my eyes fluttering shut as I listened to the soft bristles of the leaves and the mating calls of the birds in their nests. Perhaps one day I would truly know what it was like to have a mate of my own… if my mate ever wanted me to find him.

Which brings me to wonder… did he even want to be found?

If so, why hadn’t he found me himself yet?

Perhaps that was why I kept losing track of his scent, because he was somehow masking it, preventing me from ever finding him. The thought sent pain to jolt through my chest, and I winced as I rubbed at the sore spot.

A rustling sound in a bush made my eyes snap open, and suddenly, the soft pine that I was smelling not long ago turned almost sour. My stomach sank as the atmosphere grew even more eerie.

I knew that scent well… I had been trained to always look out for that scent, though without Lora here to guide me and take control, I feared I would be powerless.

Rogues.

I could smell them almost a mile away, even without Lora being present. But I somehow missed their approach now. My heart hammered in my chest; they were close… too close, and they had set their sights on me.

Just as I turned towards the direction of the palace, ready to bolt, I heard a loud growl. Suddenly, a large grey wolf

came out of nowhere. His eyes were yellow, and his mouth was open in a snarl. His stench hit me immediately, and I nearly gagged.

Just as I was about to let out a scream, another wolf… a much larger wolf… came out of nowhere and tackled the
