Chapter 283

Cecilia’s POV

Landon folded his arms across his chest as he stood behind us, his eyes narrowed. It was as if he was confronting a couple of children, ready to scold them for misbehaving. I felt my cheeks burning because, in hindsight, it was like that.

Landon looked up at Warren, a frown marring his lips.

“Your Majesty, do I need to be worried?” He asked, not realizing that it wasn’t Leopold he was speaking to, but

Warren.

Just as Warren opened his mouth to speak, I put my hand on his arm, stopping him. It was a gesture that Landon caught almost right away, and his brows shot up to his hairline.

“We were just leaving,” I told him quickly.

I was about to step around him, taking Warren with me, but his voice rang out behind me.

“Freeze.”

I froze almost immediately, and Warren tensed. I wasn’t sure how I knew it, but Warren didn’t like the tone that Landon was taking on with me… or maybe he didn’t like the tone he was taking on with him. I couldn’t be sure.

A low growl emerged from Warren’s throat, making Landon freeze before he approached any further.

“Did you just growl?” Landon asked, his brows raising even more. “Your Majesty, I…”

His voice trailed off when he looked into his eyes, and then his eyes grew impossibly large.

“You’re not Leopold.”

It wasn’t a question, just a simple observation.

“I am not that sorry excuse of a King who can’t see the difference between truth and deceit,” Warren said between his teeth, anger rolling off him in waves.

I tightened my hold on his arm, silently telling him that he was saying too much and he needed to stop.

“Warren…” Landon said, taking an unsteady step backward; fear was clear on his face.

I understood the fear; Landon had only ever seen Warren when he was at his most unstable, killing for what seemed like sport. But now, Warren stood in front of him, as stable as could be, looking him in the eyes and speaking as if he were nothing more than a man.

“He’s afraid of you,” I say in my head, hoping that Warren would be able to hear it like he could when Leopold was in control, and I could speak secretly to his wolf. “You need to tone down the growly behavior.”

“Can’t help it. Angry,” Warren replied, his voice echoing in my head like it owned the space inside of me.

I cleared my throat and turned to Landon, trying to appease him.

“It’s okay… he’s not going to hurt you,” I told him, trying to keep my tone reassuring. “He’s helping me.”

Landon blinked, confusion clear on his face before his brows furrowed.

“Helping you?” He asked, shaking his head. “I don’t understand. How long had this… uh… relationship been

‘s not a relationship,” I said a little too quickly. “Warren and I are friends… nothing more. He’s helping me find out information about my mother’s death.”

Landon stared at me for a moment longer.

“What does Alpha William and his Luna have to do with your mother… and since when are you friends with this beast?”

Warren growled, a deep and guttural sound.

Without thinking, I placed my hand over his mouth, trying to silence the sound before the rest of the bar heard it and he attracted unwanted attention. The motion made Landon’s eyes grow impossibly large with disbelief.

“Can we not talk about this right here,” I pleaded. “I don’t want anyone else to know we are here. Especially not Alpha William.”

“Too drunk to know anything,” Warren murmured against my hand.
