Chapter 285

I was getting sick and tired of waking up in a different location. Except this time, it was the first time I’d woken up while still standing. Come to think of it… I don’t even remember going to sleep.
I furrowed my brows, trying to think back to earlier in the day… or last night. I had no idea what time it was. Whether it was still evening… or morning.
But I recognized the setting of my office and the girl standing in front of me. I pressed my lips together when I saw Cecilia’s reddened cheeks and the widening of her eyes.
“The fuck is going on??” I asked, my tone coming out short of a growl.
She swallowed and took a step back.
“Anna escaped,” she blurted, and then her eyes widened again as if she hadn’t meant to blurt those words out.
I narrowed my eyes.
“What?” I asked.
“Anna… my former maid… she escaped the dungeons,” she said, her voice coming out softer now. “I was coming to tell you.”
“Fuck,” I hissed as I shoved past her, nearly knocking her off her feet. “Why are you the one to tell me and not Landon?”
“Landon went to close the borders and send off the patrol,” she said, rushing after me. “He’s hoping she didn’t get far.”
“Why are you following me?”
She paused, her footsteps faltering, nearly making her trip over her own feet.
“I… uh…” she started to say, and I turned to face her.
I couldn’t deal with this right now; I needed to find that prisoner before she did something reckless. And I needed to figure out how the fuck she escaped. I also wanted to figure out why Warren decided to take control again and what he was doing with Cecilia before I regained control. Cecilia’s cheeks were red, and her eyes were filled with sudden remorse.
“What time is it?”
“Almost midnight,” she replied.
“It’s late. Return to your room and sleep. There’s nothing more for us to say.”
On that note, I turned and walked away, going to find Landon and figure out what the fuck I just missed. By the
time I found him, he was already sending troops to patrol the forest and find a trail that could lead to the prisoner.
“You’re back,” Landon said, looking me over. “Are you feeling well?”
I furrowed my brows.
“Back from where?”

“You weren’t exactly… yourself, Sire,” he explained. “You were… uh…”
wolf,” I said, finishing his sentence.
He nodded slowly.
“Precisely,” he said. “I was surprised to see him and Miss Cecilia hanging out. I wasn’t expecting a friendship between the two of them. Were you aware of it?”
“If it’s all the same to you, I’d rather not speak about it. Just tell me where we are at with this situation.”
Landon caught me up on the situation with the prisoner and all the information he had found out. He sent more troops to her former pack to see if she had found a trail home.
After several hours, I went back to my own chambers to get a few hours of actual sleep. I prayed to the Goddess that my wolf behaved himself while I slept.
The next morning, I was relieved to find myself still in my bed, and this time, there was no Cecilia in sight. I needed to keep my distance from her if I was going to figure out this Sophia situation. I knew there was something inside of me that refused to believe she was the one the Goddess had paired me with. But I couldn’t figure out how she could wear my mark.
Cecilia was nothing but a distraction, and sending her back to her pack was the best thing I could do for her. The sooner my wolf came to terms with that… the better. I often wondered if he knew what I was thinking and feeling … or if that part of our connection was blocked off for him as well.
I wasn’t going to visit Sophia this morning, but I had to keep up appearances. Besides, her family was staying at the palace, and if they thought for a second I wasn’t committed to Sophia, it could ruin things.
