The Bride He Took for Granted

Chapter 58

Before Harold could adjourn the meeting, Elise, still wearing her mask, rose from her seat.

As she returned the call, she said, “Sorry, Mr. Nash. I need to take this.”

Harold had barely nodded before she turned and hurried out of

the conference room.

Jason immediately knew something was wrong.

Elise was usually composed. He had rarely seen her this flustered.

“Sorry, Mr. Nash,” he said. “I need to step out for a minute.”

“Meeting adjourned,” Harold said.

When they stepped outside, they saw Elise speaking urgently into the phone.

“Don’t go anywhere. Wait for me. I’m on my way…”

She hurried toward the elevator, then suddenly remembered she hadn’t told Harold she needed to leave.

Turning back, she found him watching her.

Without going back over, she called, “Mr. Nash, something came up. We’ll have to finish the proposal later.”

Harold took one look at how anxious she was and didn’t ask any questions.

Jason caught up with her. “What happened?”

Elise kept walking, her face tense.

“My mom came to Los Angeles. She saw Landon… and Joan.”

Jason knew Landon well, and he also knew how much Elise cared about her adoptive mother.

One look at Elise’s face, and he understood.

She had never told Jane that things between her and Landon had fallen apart.

“I’ll drive you.”

The elevator doors opened, and Elise stepped inside.

“You still need to work on the build. I can get a cab. It’ll be faster.”

Jason was about to follow her in when Elise pressed the close-door button.

The doors slid shut, leaving him outside.

Harold watched in silence for two seconds, then turned toward his private elevator.

Daniel hurried after him. “Mr. Nash, where are you going?”

“Out.”

“Where to?”

“I have something to take care of.” Harold kept walking.

Daniel hesitated. “…Can it wait?”

Harold stopped and shot him a sharp look.

Daniel immediately shrank back. “You have a lunch meeting with the CEOs of Apex Capital and Zephyr Tech. They

specifically asked for you to be there.”

Harold checked his watch. It was already eleven. If he left now, he might not make it back in time.

“You go.”

“Me?” Daniel stared at him.

Harold’s tone left no room for argument. “Explain tha

Daniel blinked.

Mr. Nash is taking them to dinner himself? They’ll be thrilled.

By the time Daniel looked up again, Harold was already inside the elevator.

The doors slid shut, and the elevator shot downward.

After getting her bag, Elise took the employee elevator downstairs.

She hurried out of the building and was about to flag down a cab when a black Rolls-Royce pulled up beside her.

The passenger window lowered halfway, revealing Harold’s handsome, impassive face.

“Get in.”

Elise stared at him in surprise, but still said, “Mr. Nash, you don’t have to go out of your way. I can—”

Harold leaned across and pushed open the passenger door.

“At this rate, we could’ve made it to the next intersection already. Get in.”

There it was again that same way of helping her that somehow sounded like an order.

Elise stopped arguing.

“Thank you, Mr. Nash.”

She quickly got into the car.

Harold pressed a button, and the passenger door closed automatically.

He pulled back into traffic. “Where to?”

“Lafitte Estates.”

As Elise gave him the address, her heart raced. All she could

think about was Jane.

She could already imagine how upset Jane must be after finding

out the truth.

At the gates of Lafitte Estates, the guard recognized Elise and waved Harold’s car through.

Elise unbuckled her seat belt and got out.

“Thank you for bringing me, Mr. Nash.”

She slung her bag over her shoulder and hurried inside, not realizing that her phone had slipped out and landed on the carpeted floor of the car.

In the living room, Joan was pressing a clean towel to Landon’s forehead.

Tears slipped down her cheeks, one landing on the back of his hand.

“Does it hurt? Should we go to the hospital?”

The worry in her voice seemed completely genuine.
