The Bride He Took for Granted
Chapter 59
Elise walked farther in and saw Jane standing at the foot of the stairs, gripping the handle of the large red suitcase. Her face was filled with hurt and anger.
The composure Elise had been clinging to suddenly gave way. Her eyes burned, and her throat tightened.
Jane didn’t even know which room was hers. She didn’t know there was an elevator in the house, either.
She must have searched room by room until she found Elise’s things, then packed them all up so she could take her away from
here.
“Mom!”
Elise rushed over and wrapped her arms around her.
Jane shoved her away.
“Don’t you have parents? How could they let people treat you like this?”
“Do Mr. and Mrs. White know about this? Are they just standing by and doing nothing?”
“They know. They do care. Mom…”

Elise’s voice broke. She reached for Jane again and held her tightly.
“It’s a long story. Come home with me first, okay? I’ll explain everything when we get there.”
Jane was usually gentle and easygoing, but right now she was furious. Her hands were trembling.
“Break up with him! Right now! We don’t need a man who cheats on you!”
Elise nodded quickly. “Okay. I’ll break up with him. I will. Just don’t be angry, okay?”
Landon went still.
An uneasy feeling rose in his chest.
She’s just saying that to calm Jane down. Yeah, that’s it.
Then a tall figure appeared in the doorway.
Landon and Joan looked over at the same time.
Harold stood just outside in a crisp suit, Elise’s phone in his hand.
His gaze passed over Landon before settling on Elise.

Elise seemed to sense someone watching her. She released Jane, wiped away her tears, and turned around.
She paused when she saw Harold.
Then she adjusted the strap of her bag, took the suitcase from Jane with one hand, and held Jane’s hand firmly with the other as they walked toward the door.
Landon’s expression darkened as he watched Harold.
What the hell is he doing here?
Then Landon noticed the phone in Harold’s hand.
And why does he have Elise’s phone?
Harold waited until Elise and Jane reached the door, then gave Jane a polite nod.
Jane studied him for a moment.
He looked twenty-seven or twenty-eight at most, but there was a calm authority in the way he carried himself.
She had no idea who he was, but his polite, composed manner immediately put her at ease.
Still a little awkward, she nodded back.

Harold held out Elise’s phone.
Only then did Elise realize what had happened.
She must have dropped it in his car when she rushed out.
She took it from him.
“Thank you, Mr. Nash.”
The phone was still warm from Harold’s hand. The warmth lingered against Elise’s palm, making her lower her eyes as she slipped it into her bag.
Harold glanced at the suitcase. “You’re leaving?”
“Yes.”
“Then let’s go.”
He stepped forward, took the suitcase from her, then moved aside to let Elise and Jane go first.
Before Elise could say anything, Landon snapped.
He tossed the towel aside and strode over. “Mr. Nash, care to explain why you had Elise’s phone? And why are you carrying
her suitcase?”

considering how anyone else might feel.
A trace of mockery flashed in Elise’s` eyes.
“Seriously? Who are you to ask?”
Harold remained perfectly calm.
“If you want an explanation, I’ll give you one. Ms. White works at Firefly, and she had something urgent to deal with, so I gave her a ride here. She left her phone in my car.”
His gaze rested on Landon.
“And I suppose that’s more appropriate than moving another woman into the home you were supposed to share with your fiancée, wouldn’t you say?”
“I…” Landon opened his mouth, but nothing came out,
Joan stood near the couch with Mochi in her arms, avoiding
everyone’s eyes.
She knew exactly what part she had played in all of this.
And she had never cared much about what other people thought.
Bamn it. Why the hell is Harold here?

With Harold there, she knew better than to stir things up any further.
Landon’s jaw tightened, but he had no grounds to question either of them.
