Chapter 66
Chloe agreed without hesitation.
“Of course. Don’t hold back. Tell her exactly what you think. I’ll back you up.”
Jane gave Chloe a grateful look and nodded.
But when they arrived at the White Manor, Jane refused to let Chloe come inside with her.
“Wait for me here. I won’t be long.”
Chloe had no choice but to stay in the car.
Jane gave her name to one of the maids, and before long, Clara came to escort her inside.
The sprawling house. The manicured courtyard. The private garden in full bloom. Servants moving quietly from room to
room.
Jane took it all in, and her chest tightened.
Had Daisy’s suffering been the price for all of this?
She swallowed hard and followed Clara into the main living
room.

Sharon was waiting for her.
Her short hair made her features look sharper, and her eyes were strikingly similar to Elise’s.
“Have a seat.”
Her voice was cool and distant. It was the kind of tone that kept people at arm’s length without her even realizing it.
A noise from the dining room caught Jane’s attention. –
She turned and saw the servants clearing breakfast. One untouched dish after another was being thrown away.
Jane looked back at Sharon.
“This morning, Daisy had to eat leftovers from last night. She barely drank any water before rushing off to work.”
Sharon didn’t react.
“That was her choice.”
Jane stared at her in disbelief.
“Her choice?” she repeated. “What about the man she was
supposed to marry?”

“Yesterday, I went to the home she was meant to share with Landon. Another woman was living there.”
Sharon remained expressionless.
“If Elise had gone to the Carter family sooner and admitted she was wrong, they would have helped her resolve everything. She’s the one who refuses to let go.”
Jane looked at her as if she were seeing a stranger.
“How can you say something like that and feel nothing?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She’s your daughter.”
Clara’s expression tightened.
She quietly signaled for the servants to leave, then stepped outside herself and closed the door behind her.
Only then did Sharon speak.
“I’m doing what’s best for her.”
“Your husband hit her.” Jane’s voice rose. “And you still call that doing what’s best for her?”

For the first time, Sharon’s expression changed.
Her face went slightly pale, and her fingers tightened around the seam of her pants.
Jane wiped away her tears and took a shaky breath.
Then the thought that had been haunting her since the night before returned.
Her gaze grew distant.
“Twenty-four years ago, I found a three-day-old baby outside a clinic near Seattle.”
Sharon froze.
“I knew the woman who left her there She was the only woman from our village who had ever made it to medical school.”
Sharon’s fingers trembled.
Jane noticed.
“She never told me who the baby’s parents were. She only said that no one wanted her.”
Jane’s voice shook, but she forced herself to continue.

She stared directly at Sharon.
“So why did you abandon her?”
Whatever composure Sharon had left began to crack.
Years later, when the White family came to take Daisy back to Los Angeles, Jane had believed her birth parents had finally come to make things right.
At the time, Eric had fallen in with a rough crowd, and Jane had already begun worrying about Daisy’s safety. So even though Daisy had been reluctant to leave, Jane had coaxed her into that
car.
She had believed she was giving her daughter a better life.
But after learning about the years of punishment, abuse, and indifference Daisy had endured, a possibility she had never dared consider before slowly began to take shape.
Jane looked straight at Sharon.
“Elise isn’t really yours and Leonard’s daughter, is she?”
“Clara!”
Sharon shot to her feet.

“Clara!”
Her voice was suddenly filled with panic.
“Get her out. Get her out of here!”
All the color drained from her face.
Jane had never expected such a reaction.
Sharon swayed, and Jane instinctively stepped forward to catch her.
But Clara rushed in first and grabbed Jane’s wrist.
“Come with me.”
She pulled Jane out of the living room, gripping her hard enough to make her wince.
Only after they were outside did Clara let go.
“What exactly are you trying to accomplish by coming here?” Clara demanded. “Everything you said is only a guess.”
Jane said nothing.
Clara continued, her voice colder.
