As soon as the post went live, a horde of people flooded the comments. Some naturally connected it to the photo incident, while others brought up my alleged fistfight with a patient. They even dragged up the video of my difficult airway intubation from a while back. The most absurd accusation was that I had staged the intubation video entirely to pave the way for a future promotion...
In a flash, I became public enemy number one. Nasty labels like "manipulative bitch" and "shameless slut" flooded the comment section—it was as vicious as it could get.
Now, the narrative wasn't that my medical skills were flawed; it was that my character and morals were completely rotten.
People were tagging the leadership of Capital General in the comments, demanding a strict investigation and an explanation for everyone.
"What a complete disaster," the head nurse said, rubbing her temples. "Dr. Yates was so furious when she saw the post that she threatened to take early retirement. This is just ridiculous," she whispered.
"Tell me about it! I've mentored so many interns, but why are you the only one causing this much trouble, Selena?" The Iron Mask had appeared behind us at some point, looking utterly exasperated. "If I had known this would happen, I would have rejected Dr. Yates's request no matter what. Great, now I'm covered in your shit too."
"Dr. Logan, calm down. The hospital is already investigating, and Selena is—"
"Enough, enough, save it. Selena, you need to take a couple days off. Go home and lay low until this blows over. Come back when there's an official result, okay?"
Looking at The Iron Mask treating me like a stray dog, my heart completely froze over. "Dr. Logan, if I take a leave of absence now, how is that any different from running away?"
The Iron Mask's eyes widened in displeasure. "Do you think you have a choice? Do you have any idea how many people showed up in the Department of Anesthesiology today just to gawk at you? What, do you want our department to turn into a petting zoo?"
I felt incredibly wronged, but on second thought, the damage was already done. Staying at my post would only pour fuel on the fire. That wasn't my biggest fear, though. My real terror was this scandal reaching my in-laws. If they found out, another bloodbath was inevitable.
So, I compromised. "Fine, I'll take the time off."
By the time I left the hospital, the sun was already setting. I sat gloomily on the subway, my mind spinning into a darker and darker spiral. When I opened the forum again, I saw that the post had already been locked by the moderators.
Someone had immediately started a new thread to mock it. "Looks like Selena really does have a massive background. Last time we discussed her photos in the group chat, the admin muted us. We drop a few comments on this post, and it gets locked instantly. Wow, having connections sure is amazing."
There was a comment right below it: "She probably had to put in a lot of hard work in bed for that."
