What in the world was I supposed to do?
Just as I was drowning in my own despair, the sudden ringing of the phone on the coffee table jolted me.
It was Leon Lennox.
He had gone out of his way to help me so much recently, and he even got reprimanded by the hospital board for it. I felt incredibly guilty.
I couldn't fathom why he was calling this late.
Forcing myself to pull it together, I took a deep breath and answered.
"Dr. Hayes, I'm so sorry, I..." Leon stammered slightly. "I just saw your missed calls."
Before leaving work, I had been worried about him and called twice, but he hadn't picked up. He must have just checked his log and returned the call.
Understanding instantly washed over me. "I'm the one who should be apologizing," I said, my voice heavy with regret. "I saw the hospital's official statement. Dr. Lennox, I owe you a massive favor."
"Come on, Selena, don't say that. We're friends," Leon replied effortlessly, half-joking. "Besides, I was fighting for justice. That reprimand is basically a badge of honor."
"But it means you can't be evaluated for your title this year. Won't this ruin your chances for promotion?"
"I think being a resident is just fine. If I had to work around the clock like Ferris, I'd probably gain another twenty pounds from stress eating."
Hearing his goofy tone, a lump formed in my throat, and tears threatened to spill.
The career advancement that Vivian and Ferris treated as the absolute center of the universe meant absolutely nothing to Leon.
