Who would have thought that a late-night trip to the simulation lab would result in running into Capital General's golden boy?
Oh, right, he also happened to be the man whose name was printed next to mine on a marriage certificate.
But whichever way you spun it, this encounter was a complete disaster.
Absolutely agonizing.
Sensing the violently awkward tension, Zoey quickly broke the silence with her signature sweet voice. "I'm so sorry, I was just looking for the Neurosurgery lab. I really didn't mean to walk in on you two."
Her eyes were wide with dramatic embarrassment. When neither of us responded, she quickly added, "But don't worry, Selena! My lips are sealed. I won't tell a soul!"
She emphasized the last sentence entirely too much.
Leon and I were doing absolutely nothing wrong, but her 'reassurance' made it sound like we were caught in a supply closet.
Leon, who lacked any filter, couldn't handle the accusation. "Selena was just practicing intubations! I bought an extra sandwich and brought it over... I literally just walked in!"
He stared directly at Ferris while explaining, practically begging him to believe it.
Ferris's dark eyes slid over to me. A cruel smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "Dr. Hayes must be incredibly charming, to have Neurosurgery staff hand-delivering care packages across departments."
His tone was conversational, but every single word felt like a knife twisting in my chest.
Right in front of Leon, he was tossing away any pretense of basic respect.
I felt a sickening drop in my stomach. Leon, offended, raised his voice. "That's not fair, Dr. Sterling! It's not like I haven't benefited from Selena's cooking before. What's wrong with returning the favor with a sandwich?"
"Before?" Zoey blinked, looking from Leon to Ferris in pure, innocent confusion.
Neither Ferris nor Leon answered her.
All three of us knew exactly what Leon was talking about—the countless lunches I used to make for Ferris, which Leon eagerly inhaled.
If Zoey asked even one follow-up question, the secret of my marriage to Ferris would instantly explode.
And Ferris was terrified of that.
Almost immediately, he changed the subject. "Weren't you looking for the lab to practice?"
Zoey looked at me, then back at Ferris, nodding mechanically. "Right. We'll leave you two alone then, Selena, Dr. Lennox."
