He really didn't see me as an outsider.
"Should I do it?" Caspian interjected when he saw I wasn't moving.
Not wanting to drag anyone else into this, I took the phone, aimed it at the two of them, and continuously tapped the shutter button.
Within just a few seconds, the scene on the screen shifted. Zoey, who had initially been sitting at a distance from Ferris, slowly leaned in until their shoulders were touching. They grew increasingly intimate.
Her smile grew more and more radiant.
When the mini-photoshoot ended, I handed the phone back. I heard Zoey sigh as she looked at Ferris. "These photos are precious memories to me. I'll treasure them forever."
I made an excuse to get up, catching a glimpse of Ferris's slightly upturned lips in my peripheral vision.
The wind on the deck was fierce. As it whipped against my neck, it nearly brought tears to my eyes.
I stood stubbornly by the railing, staring at the distant neon lights as my mood plummeted to rock bottom.
So what if I had shone at the seminar? What did it matter if the senior staff praised me? In the end, it couldn't compare to a single word from Zoey about treasuring photos to win Ferris's heart.
She was the precious rose he nurtured in the palm of his hand. Unlike me, who, despite constantly accommodating him, could never mold myself into the kind of person Ferris liked.
Even though I had revolved my life around him for the past eight years.
"Dr. Hayes?"
The voice snapped me out of my thoughts. Through my tear-blurred vision, I saw Caspian standing a few feet away.
Watching him approach, I forced my tears back and managed a weak smile. "Is there something you need, Dr. Cross?"
