Dominic’s POV

The jeweler stood hunched over the counter with a loupe screwed into one eye, turning the band under the light. He’d been polishing it for upward of twenty minutes now, and there seemed to be no end in sight.

“Amost finished, Alpha,” he said, smiling as he worked. “I just want to make sure it’s perfect.”

I tapped my foot and checked my phone, sighing at the long list of notifications on my lock screen. Campaign emails, calls from my advisors, texts from my Beta regarding event preparations. The press release had gone out at nine that morning. All packs were invited to the spring unveiling, and the RSVPs were already rolling in.

It wasn’t the emails that caught my eye, though. It was the five texts from Ellie, two missed calls, and the thought of her angry, waiting face on the other end.

Shit.

I slipped my phone back into my pocket and checked my watch. It was 2:10 already, past the time I was supposed to meet her. The original plan was to pick up the ring after my last meeting and make it to the clinic on time, as promised, but the meeting ran late-and now, so was the jeweler.

Finally, the old male finished his work, carefully placed the ring into the tiny velvet box I’d picked out, and slid it across the counter. I snatched it up and held it up to the light, just as he had. The opal caught the shaft of sun coming in through the window, throwing rainbows across my thumb.

“The stone’s a rare one,” he said as he put his tools away. “Never worked an opal like it. Where’d you say it came from?”

“Goldenveil,” I said.

“Hm. That’s the new pack up north?” he asked.

I nodded and put the box into the inner pocket of my jacket, right over my heart.

Terence had put the opal in my hand two nights before we left Goldenveil. He’d caught me alone, pressed a little cloth bundle into my palm, and folded my fingers over it with both of his. Inside was a raw opal the size of a thumbnail, full of green and gold fire, the exact color of his daughter’s eyes.

“You’ll know what it’s for,” was all he’d said.

I drove to the clinic well over the speed limit and made it just in time, my heart pounding the entire way.

A ring. A promise. A new opportunity to do things right this time around…
