143 Secret room

Ophelia got ready for the night ahead. She was astounded to discover a huge closet full of ostentatious gowns and jewelry that were all for her. The space had been carefully designed by Nikolai to accommodate a married couple. She blushed uncontrollably.

Nikolai was nowhere to be found when she made her way back into the bedroom. She had a strong feeling that something wasn’t right.

She took a deep breath and moved cautiously in the direction of the door, but as soon as she grabbed the handle, a sudden flash of pain and a foggy image sent her staggering backwards and away from the door.

“What in the world was that?” As the agony increased, she grimaced and rubbed her forehead.

When the picture reappeared, it was more vivid this time. A memory?

In a dim area of his room, young Nikolai was sitting. He was dressed in a beautiful, white nightgown and had long hair that was nicely braided into two plaits. But he looked afraid. He was trembling uncontrollably, and he kept shaking his head as if he didn’t want anyone to see him in that

condition.

‘Go away!’ He screamed, his olive green eyes filling with tears.

Ophelia’s head began to hurt more and more, and just before she collapsed on the floor, she glanced over at the precise spot that stood out in her memory.

‘You can’t chase me away, i want to help you.’ In that memory, a second small voice echoed. Just as Ophelia realized it was indeed her, her head suddenly rang loudly, and she cried out in agony.

Little Nikolai shouted, “I said STAY AWAY FROM ME!” and the pain that had caked over the memory vanished like it had never existed.

Ophelia took a trembling breath and stiffly narrowed her eyes at that particular place. It was situated between two tall bookcases, which had matching lamps next to them. She was unable to turn her gaze away for an odd reason. The corner was large, and after giving it even closer attention, it appeared to be a door.

She stood up and moved over to the area, grunting as she pressed her fingertips against the slick marble wall.

“Why am I so interested in a wall? What was the subject of the memory?” She pondered this, heaved a heavy sigh, and leaned back against the wall to calm herself.

“Am I still in shock over Tiana?” She asked herself once again before moving to the right-side shelf and looking intently at the books there.

“He reads.” She chuckled and pulled an odd book with a red cover. What she didn’t anticipate, though, was to hear the earth tremble all the way to the alleged wall she had just rested her back against.

She watched the wall with wide eyes as it shook and then disappeared from view, revealing a set of stairs leading down.

“What in the world?” Ophelia exclaimed in utter shock and proceeded to

the door.” A secret room?”

A major part of her was pushing her to give in to her curiosity and discover what was in the secret room, but a small part of her was telling her to avoid trouble and wait for Nikolai.

Would she later regret it?

She entered the chamber slowly and wondered if there was an opening to the outside when she felt a coldness in the air. She took more steps, the

chill grew, and she wrapped her arms tightly around herself, transforming her eyes into their golden reptile-like form so that she could see more clearly in the darkness.

As she descended the final step, the echo of her feet in the unfamiliar room alerted her to the half-moon reflection in the weird chamber.

“Oh, my gods!” She gasped, lifting her head, expecting to see a ceiling but finding instead a complete view of the starry night sky and the half moon instead. “What is…”

The absence of snow in the space suggested that something was wrong. A flame suddenly erupted directly above her palm, and she shot it, expecting it to fly out, but instead it collided with an invisible force and was violently extinguished.

The discovery caused Ophelia’s eyes to widen. “A concealing spell?”

There was a roof, but the spell allowed those inside the room to perceive the sky as if it were outside. Although it was a combination of truth and an illusion, it was akin to an illusion.

As Ophelia looked about the area, she became horrified when she noticed a wall-mounted stack of tiny binding shackles intended to confine youngsters. Her heart twisted to the point where she nearly shouted in anguish and tears filled her eyes.

She moved cautiously in the direction of the wall and observed large dents, cracks, and small claw marks on it.

“Nikolai?” Ophelia squatted with her hands on the claws as her voice quivered and her eyes bawled uncontrollably.

They were in great numbers. It displayed power… She was unable to fully express herself.

She stood up trembling and turned to face another wall.

This one was distinctive.

She approached it slowly and knelt down.

Bizarre texts and doodles.

‘I have a little magic in me thanks to Tiana. This is my thoughts wall. I am the only one who can see it.

“Thoughts wall?” Ophelia guffawed. She found it unbelievable that Nikolai had designed a path where he could jot down his thoughts. Weren’t there any books? How long did he stay in this room?

Ophelia’s eyes skimmed over the words, but she focused on a few particularly intriguing ones.

‘Mama gave me food today! I ate in spite of how unexpected it was.’

‘Papa slapped my cheeks and yelled at me today. Even if it hurts, I’ll be OK. That’s what Aunt Tiana told me.’

“Tiana.” Ophelia hissed. Despite all Tiana had done to him, Nikolai seemed to sincerely like her. After all, she was the only one who gave him her undivided attention.

‘Papa says dragons are bad, but she isn’t.’

“What?” Ophelia whispered.

‘She keeps following me around. Should I get rid of her?’

Ophelia laughed. “What is this?”

‘She bit my arm today when I tried to chase her away. The mark is throbbing!’
