210 The guardian spirit (1)
210 The guardian spirit (1)
“Do you believe that staying in a brothel of all places is a good idea?” As
they entered the corridor of a busy brothel, Esmeralda questioned, scoffing incredulously.
The sound of music reverberated, accompanied by both male and female whoops and laughter.
After leaving the castle, Lev suggested a place for them to rest. And it turned out to be the city’s largest brothel.
“It is safe here.” He led them up the stairs. “Trust me.
To avoid drawing unneeded attention, they went in a different direction where fewer people were present.
“I do not trust you.” Glaring at Nikolai, who had remained silent the entire time, Esmeralda grimaced.
Cradled in his arms, swaddled in his cloak, was Ophelia. She looked so frail and pale.
“I have an old acquaintance here. Stop overthinking things.” Lev murmured
Esmeralda scowled.

In no time, they emerged from the corridor into a spacious garden surrounded by trees and blankets of snow. Rather than having icicles hanging from their branches, every tree was ablaze with flames. The fire did not appear to be burning the branches; instead, they swayed, trembled,
and flared like the fruits the trees bore.
Nikolai and Esmeralda came to a complete stop. They looked around the yard, slightly taken aback.
“Where is this place?” Finally, Nikolai spoke up.

Lev paused, took a deep breath, and turned to face them. “It is a place where Ophelia can rest.”
“It no longer feels like we are in the brothel, and I can no longer hear the noises.” Muttering, Nikolai’s tone seemed to be getting colder and colder.
Lev maintained a neutral expression. “That is because we are no longer in the brothel.”
Nikolai twitched his lips. “Was it meant to be a cover–up?”
Nikolai’s words surprised Esmeralda, who was staring out at the yard in complete amazement.
“Cover up?” Glancing at Nikolai, she questioned. “Do you think he transported us? But he is only a golden dragon. He is not endowed with
such skills.”
Lev frowned. “The brothel serves as a gateway.”
Esmeralda fixed her gaze on him. “Gateway to your acquaintance?”
“If you do not wish to remain here, you can give Ophelia to me and leave!” The golden dragon gave them a sharp look.
Nikolai remained silent. He narrowed his eyes at Lev, who stood his ground.
“The sun stone. Forbidden magic has been infused into that stone. An antiquated form of magic. The very same spell that called forth the celestial souls that gave you two lives. There is nothing good about this magic. It will alter the sun goddess. Her purity will diminish from what it once was. The same holds true for you. The blood pearl will only deepen your shadow.” The dragon spoke in a low, foreboding voice that was full of caution.
Esmeralda opened her mouth to speak, but she remained silent. Lev’s words were sufficient to clarify everything, but she wanted to speak primarily to ask him a question. How come he knew so much? What was the extent of his knowledge?

“And how does this acquaintance of yours intend to assist Ophelia?” Nikolai asked, his voice and expression solemn.
Lev said nothing. Instead, he turned away and began walking ahead.
Following in silence, Nikolai and Esmeralda soon found themselves in front of a massive mansion nearly the size of a castle.
Lights were reflected from every window, and there were no guards in sight. The snow clouds were gloomy, and the winds were noticeably colder.
They ascended the stairs and stood before a large, pristine white door adorned with specially carved suns made of pure gold.
The doors parted as soon as Lev put his hand up against them, revealing a stunning young woman in front of them with vivid auburn hair and dark brown eyes.
“How dare you come to my home with a demon lycan?!” She glared at Lev, fury twisted across her face.
“Believe me, I did not want to. “However, my sister.” Lev motioned his head
to his unconscious sister.
The maiden’s rage subsided. “What ha… I can feel the energy of the sun
stone.”
“Wait. Not to be impolite, but who are you?” Esmeralda questioned, highly suspicious.
“She is the guardian spirit of Fireria.” In response, Nikolai cocked his head in the direction of the guardian spirit. “My wife gets cold easily. Let us in.”
“Show some decency!” Lev hissed at Nikolai.
“With Ophelia unconscious, you appear to be managing your emotions quite well. Do not feel obligated to conceal them. Hate is something I am already used to. You are nothing but another pest to me.” Snapping his eyes,

Nikolai mumbled and tightened his hold on Ophelia.
The guardian spirit took a deep breath. “If you give me the sun stone, I will let you all in.”
Nikolai cocked his brow at her. “No.”
“Do you have any idea who I am?” The guardian spirit gasped in surprise. “How dare you refuse me?!”
Nikolai advanced towards her with a long, deliberate stride. His tall, well–fitting body shielded her from the other’s view.
The guardian spirit gave him a quick blink and her face flushed while he looked down at her with deranged fury. Despite her feelings of inferiority in his presence at the time, a big part of her could not help but admire him.
Slowly and firmly, she shifted her gaze away from his flaming eyes and towards the unconscious dragoness in his arms. “She is not in a critical condition. All she needs to do is rest and warm up with her dragon fire.”
