Chapter One Hundred Eighty
Clam
The word struck Gideon harder than a physical blow. His face changed. For one moment, pain replaced the madness in his expression. Then the pain became rage.
“Monster?”
His voice trembled.
“You call me a monster?”
Dark magic rolled across the ground.
“You abandoned me.”
Agatha’s parents struggled to rise behind them.
“You left without saying goodbye.”
His voice grew louder.
“You chose another man. Another creature. You carried his child.”
Every word sounded torn from a wound that had never healed.
“You destroyed me.”
Tears filled his eyes, but the darkness remained.
“You broke everything inside me.”
Agatha stared at him. Despite her fear, despite everything he had done, she could hear the truth of his pain. He had suffered.
Her leaving had wounded him deeply. But pain did not excuse cruelty. It did not excuse threats. It did not excuse imprisonment.
And it would never justify harming her child.
“Gideon,” she said softly, “I am sorry.”
He stared at her.
“I am truly sorry.”
Her voice broke.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“Then choose me.”
“I cannot.”
His expression hardened. Agatha shook her head.

He inhaled sharply.
“But not the way you needed me to.”
His grip tightened.
“You belonged to me.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No, Gideon.”
She looked directly into his darkened eyes.
“I belonged to myself.”
The truth seemed to anger him even more.
“Our family promised you to me.”
“Our families were wrong.”
“We were meant to bind.”
“Our magic never chose each other.”
“Magic does not matter.”
“It matters to me.”
Agatha placed one hand over her stomach.
“Lucian is my mate.”
The shadows around Gideon’s body rose.
“He is my one and only mate.”
“Stop.”
“He is the father of my pup.”
“I said stop.”
“You can force me into a binding ceremony.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“You can threaten my parents. You can imprison me. You can take every choice away from me.”
Gideon’s breathing became ragged.

She lifted her chin.
“I will never be your mate.
His face twisted.
“My magic will never accept you.”
“It will.”
“No.”
“You will submit.”
“I will not.”
“You have no choice.”
“You can force my body.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But you cannot force my soul.”
Gideon stared at her.
“The bond between Lucian and me cannot be replaced.”,
She continued.

“My magic knows only one mate. My heart knows only one mate. My child knows only one father.”

A terrible stillness fell over Gideon. Agatha felt the air around them grow colder. Even the distant battle seemed to fade beneath the darkness gathering inside him.
Then- The barrier shattered. The sound exploded across the coven. A wave of silver light tore through the sky. The magical wards surrounding the settlement broke apart in thousands of glowing fragments. The ground trembled beneath the force.
Howls erupted from the forest. Not one. Not dozens. Thousands.
The coven bells stopped ringing. For one heartbeat, everything became silent. Then came the thunder of paws. Wolves poured through the broken border. The sound grew louder. Closer. Agatha’s heart leaped. Her mate had done it. Lucian had broken Gideon’s barrier.
“My mate is here,” she whispered.
Gideon looked toward the forest. Shock briefly crossed his features. It disappeared beneath fury.
“You sound proud.”
“I am.”
“You believe he can save you?”

The first wolves appeared at the far end of the village. Large, disciplined warriors moved in formation, their eyes glowing beneath the fading light. They did not attack the frightened witches running from them. They passed children. Ignored elders.
Moved only against those raising magic or weapons. Agatha understood immediately. Lucian had given them orders. This was not slaughter. This was rescue. Gideon saw the same thing. His grip on her became painful.
