Chapter One Hundred Eighty Two
Chain
Gideon stared at her. His focus remained completely fixed on Agatha. He did not notice Lucian’s breathing steady. He did not notice the black veins beginning to recede from the Silver Wolf’s arm.
Lucian’s wolf had never encountered that poison before. It had taken time to understand it. To break it apart. To force it from his blood.
But Lucian was the Silver Wolf. Poison could slow him. It could hurt him. But it could not control him.
Inside their shared mind, his wolf growled.
“The poison is gone.”
“Can you move?”
“We can kill him.”
Lucian slowly pushed himself to his feet. Gideon continued shouting at Agatha.
“You owe me everything!”
“I owe you nothing!”
“You owe me the life you promised!”
“I never promised you my life!”
Gideon lifted one hand toward the barrier.
“You will bind yourself to me, or I will-”
He never finished. Lucian moved. Too fast for Gideon to see. One moment, Lucian stood several feet away. The next, his fist slammed into Gideon’s face. The impact threw the witch backward. Gideon crashed into the ground, black magic scattering around him. The barrier surrounding Agatha shattered instantly. She gasped.
“Lucian!”
She ran toward him as quickly as her pregnant body allowed. Lucian turned and caught her carefully, pulling her into his arms.
Agatha buried her face against his chest. For the first time in nearly two months, she felt his warmth. His scent. His heartbeat. Home.
“My love,” Lucian whispered.
His arms tightened around her without hurting her.
“I found you.”
Agatha cried against him.
“I knew you would.”

Lucian lowered one hand to her stomach. The pop moved beneath his palm. His breath caught.
“Our pup.
“Safe.”
Agatha covered his hand with hers.
“We are both safe.”

Lucian closed his eyes briefly. Relief nearly brought him to his knees. Behind them, Gideon slowly rose. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth. He stared at Agatha wrapped in Lucian’s arms. At the way she clung to him. At the way Lucian touched her stomach. At the love between them.
Something inside Gideon finally broke beyond repair. The darkness surrounding him expanded. It spread across the ground, swallowing grass, stone, and broken wood.
Wolves growled and moved backward. Witches cried out as the shadows climbed the walls of their homes. Agatha turned.
“Gideon…”
But Gideon’s eyes were gone. There was only darkness. His body stood at the center of the storm, but something else looked through him now. Something ancient. Something filled with hatred older than any of them. A voice emerged from Gideon’s mouth.
It was not his voice. It sounded layered. Countless whispers speaking together.
“You have won today, Alpha.”
Lucian moved Agatha behind him. His claws extended.
“What are you?”
The darkness laughed.
“You will have your mate.”
The shadows circled them.
“You will have your child.”
Agatha gripped Lucian’s arm.
“You will return to your home.”
The voice continued.
“You will laugh. You will love. You will know peace.”
For one brief moment, the words sounded like acceptance. Like surrender. Like the ending Agatha had prayed for. But the darkness coating every syllable made her skin crawl. Lucian felt it too.
“This is not over,” he said.

“No.”
“The darkness answered.
“It will never be over.”
The shadows rose behind Gideon like enormous wings.
“The love you feel for each other… will have a price.”
Agatha’s face paled.
“What do you mean?”
“The happiness you enjoy in this life… will be paid for by those who carry your blood.”
Lucian growled.
“Do not threaten my descendants.”
“This is not a threat.”
The darkness spread farther.
“It is a promise.”
The surrounding air became painfully cold.
“Whenever the Silver Wolf is born again…
The shadows tightened around Gideon’s body.
“…I will return.”
Agatha shook her head.
“No.”
“A war will follow her.”
The voice grew louder.
“Wolves and witches will turn against one another. Love will become betrayal. Hope will become pain. Families will be destroyed. Blood will stain every generation touched by the Silver Wolf.”
Lucian stepped forward.
“You will do nothing.”
The darkness laughed again.
“You cannot destroy what has already become part of your bloodline.”
Agatha’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.
“Leave our child out of this.”
