The Silver Wolf (Diana and Talon) novel Chapter 196

Chapter One Hundred Ninety Six

An hour passed. Then another, Diana slowly woke. She blinked several times, momentarily confused by the warmth surrounding her.

Then she felt it. An arm wrapped around her waist. A broad chest pressed against her back. Warm breath against her neck.

Talon.

A smile immediately curved her lips. She turned her head slightly. Her mate was asleep. Completely asleep. His face looked softer without the constant tension he carried as Alpha King.

His dark lashes rested against his cheeks, and one stubborn strand of hair had fallen across his forehead. Diana smiled wider. He looked peaceful. Young. Almost innocent. Almost.

Inside her mind, Artemis stirred. Then immediately became offended.

“Mate was supposed to wake us.”

Diana nearly laughed aloud.

“What?”

“He came here to take us to the healer. But he is sleeping.”

Diana glanced at Talon again.

“He looks like he needed it.”

“That is not the point.”

Artemis appeared in their shared space lying dramatically on her stomach with her chin resting between her paws. Her silver ears were tilted backward. Diana stared at her wolf.

“Are you sulking?”

“No.”

“You look like you are sulking.”

“I am disappointed.”

Diana bit her lip to keep from laughing.

“What exactly are you disappointed about?”

Artemis lifted her head.

“When we woke…”

She paused dramatically.

“…mate’s eyes were closed.”

Diana stared.

“That is it?”

“I wanted him to be the first thing we saw.”

“He was the first thing we saw.”

“No.”

Artemis huffed.

“We saw a sleeping mate.”

Diana finally laughed softly. Talon shifted behind her but did not wake. She lowered her voice.

“You realize how ridiculous you sound?”

“I am with pup.”

“So?”

“I am allowed.”

Diana’s smile widened.

“Is this what being with pup does to you?”

Artemis narrowed her eyes.

“What?”

“Turns the great Silver Wolf into a jealous little pup?”

Artemis’s ears flattened completely.

“I am not jealous.”

“You are upset because Talon was asleep instead of staring lovingly into our eyes when we woke up.”

“He should have been.”

Diana covered her mouth to keep from laughing louder.

“Oh, Goddess.”

Artemis looked genuinely offended now.

“At least he is sleeping beside us.”

“There. You admitted it.”

“Admitted what?”

“That you are happy he’s here.”

Artemis looked away. Diana smiled.

“You know you did not mean what you said.”

“What did I say?”

“That Talon and Fenrir cannot take care of our pup because they fell asleep.”

Artemis became quiet. Diana’s expression softened.

“Do not say things like that, even inside our mind.

Artemis looked back toward her.

“You know Talon. You know Fenrir. They will be wonderful fathers.”

Artemis’s expression softened slightly. Diana continued.

“They already love our pup, and they only found out a few hours ago.”

She glanced down toward Talon’s hand, which was still resting over her stomach even while he slept.

“Look at him.”

Artemis followed her gaze. Talon’s palm remained protectively spread over their abdomen.

“He did not even move his hand while sleeping,” Diana whispered.

Artemis’s ears slowly lifted.

“He is protecting our pup.”

“Yes.”

Artemis’s tail gave the smallest wag. Diana smiled knowingly.

“If Talon and Fenrir heard you saying they would not be good fathers, they would be hurt.”

Artemis immediately became alarmed.

“They cannot hear us right now, can they?”

Diana laughed.

“No.”

“Good.”

“You care.”

“Of course I care.”

Artemis huffed again.

“They are our mate.”

“And they will be good fathers.”

“The best.”

Clam

Artemis said it with absolute certainty now. Diana reached back and gently touched Talon’s sleeping face. Her fingertips brushed his cheek. He leaned instinctively into her touch. Diana’s heart melted.

“You really needed this rest, didn’t you, my love?” she whispered.

Talon’s eyes slowly opened. For several seconds, he simply looked at her. Then concern appeared.

“What is wrong, mate?”

Diana blinked.

“Nothing.”

Talon pushed himself up slightly.

“I can feel Artemis through our bond.”

His brows furrowed.

“She is upset.”

Inside Diana’s mind, Artemis suddenly looked embarrassed. Diana smiled.

“Oh, she is.”

“What happened?”

Talon immediately looked around the room as though expecting to find some threat hiding behind the curtains.

“Did something hurt you?”

“No.”

“Are you feeling sick?”

“No.”

“Is something wrong with the pup?”

“No, Talon.”

“Then why is Artemis upset?”

Diana tried not to laugh.

“She is crossed with you.”

Talon stared at her.

With me?”

“And Fenrir.”

Fenrir instantly woke inside Talon’s mind.-

“What did we do?”

Talon frowned.

“What did we do?”

Diana finally laughed.

“You were supposed to wake,us and take us to the healer.”

Talon looked guilty.

“I know.”

“But instead…”

Diana gestured toward the bed.

“…you fell asleep.”

Talon waited.

“And?”

Diana’s eyes sparkled with amusement.

“Artemis wanted to wake up and see your eyes looking at us.”

Talon blinked. Inside him, Fenrir surged forward so violently that Talon’s eyes flashed gold.

“Mate!”

His voice came out deeper, carrying both man and wolf. Diana laughed. Fenrir practically howled through the bond.

“Mate, do not be angry with us!”

Artemis immediately sat upright inside Diana’s mind.

“We are not angry. We only wanted mate awake.”

Talon reached for Diana, cupping her face.

“We are sorry.”

“Talon-”

“We wanted you to rest.”

“I know.”

Diana raised an eyebrow.

She laughed.
