Chapter 189
Watching Joseph walk out once again, Cora knew he wouldn’t be coming home tonight. They had just spent the previous night together, so she wasn’t desperate at the moment. Instead of stopping him, she just assigned bodyguards to follow him.
“Dad, what was that about? Why were you trying to hit him again? Aren’t you worried he might fight back?” Cora questioned.
Bernard replied, “Do I really need to explain it? What he’s doing at the hospital is a direct challenge to New World Group.”
He had plenty of grievances to air. The other powerful families had already been pressuring him to control Joseph. If Joseph reignited tensions between Jenton and Croma again, the Lowell family would bear all the consequences.
Cora stated, “It’s only Jenton University Hospital. How much money could New World Group make from it? If they’re treating this as a threat, they’re being far too sensitive.
“Dad, this could have been resolved through a conversation. If you had talked to Joseph properly, he probably would have backed off. Trying to hit him only made things worse. That wasn’t the best way to handle it.”
“I know I shouldn’t have done that, but every time I see his attitude, I just want to teach him a lesson,” said Bernard.
All of a sudden, there was a loud crash. A flowerpot had fallen from the second floor and shattered on the ground below. Bernard and Cora both looked over, surprised.
It was a flowerpot from Selena’s balcony. There were protective railings. Under normal circumstances, it was impossible for a flowerpot to fall off. Besides, the trajectory wasn’t straight down. It had clearly been thrown.
There was only one person there, and it was Selena.
“Dad, just wait and see. Selena adores Joseph, yet you raised your hand against him right in front of her. She’s definitely going to make a scene now,” said Cora before heading upstairs.
Selena had locked herself inside her room. Cora knocked on the door but got no response. Finally, Cora had the housekeeper bring the key.
The moment Cora entered, she found Selena wearing earphones with music blasting in her ears. When Cora removed the earphones, she noticed dirt on Selena’s hands.
“Selena, what’s wrong?” Cora asked.
“Why was Grandpa trying to hit Dad?” Selena questioned.
Apparently, Grace’s people had blocked the bodyguards for a few minutes. By the time the bodyguards got past the obstruction, Joseph vanished.
Cora ordered a wider search. Then, she gave Grace a call and ordered her to hand Joseph over. Nonetheless, Grace couldn’t do as she was told because she had no idea where he was either.
The search turned up nothing. So, Cora could only tell Selena that Joseph was performing surgery and couldn’t return.
At this time, Selena said, “Mom, you’re lying. Did you use work as an excuse to lie to Dad in the past too?”
“I’ve never lied to him. Why would you ask something like that?” Cora denied.
“Dad isn’t coming back. He has stopped loving me. He doesn’t want me anymore!” Selena muttered, climbing into bed and pulling the blanket over her head to sleep.
Cora was worried upon seeing Selena’s condition. At the same time, she felt displeased with Joseph, thinking he was the cause of all this.
