Not wanting to waste another breath on him, Ivy finished hanging the IV bag, grabbed her tray, and walked out.
Ethan watched her retreating figure, utterly convinced that her refusal to talk about her husband meant she was hiding some dark, painful secret.
Determined to uncover the truth, Ethan grabbed his phone and dialed Alaric's number.
When the line connected, Ethan's voice was weak but desperate.
"Alaric, are you busy right now?"
The voice on the other end was freezing. "Speak."
"It's about Ivy. Could you use your connections to look into her husband? I need to know who he is and why they rushed into marriage."
If he dug up the truth and found out Ivy had no underlying trauma and married this guy willingly, he would step back and wish her the best.
But if he found out Ivy was coerced or blackmailed, he was going to intervene.
Foster Towers.
Sitting in the cavernous executive suite, a man in a bespoke suit leaned back in his leather chair. A dangerous, violent aura radiated from him. His flawlessly sculpted face was as dark and terrifying as a thundercloud.
His grip on his phone tightened until his knuckles turned white.
"Alaric? Did you hear me? Can you look into Ivy's husband for me?"
Met with dead silence, Ethan cautiously repeated his request.
Alaric's voice was pure ice. "You like her that much?"
Ethan didn't deny it. "Yeah, I've liked her for a long time. But she had a boyfriend back then, so I couldn't exactly make a move. I finally found out they broke up, but before I could even celebrate, I hear she's married."
"I refuse to believe Ivy is the kind of girl who would just recklessly marry some random guy."
"Can you please just look into it and tell me what the hell is going on?"
Ethan knew his uncle was the most powerful man in the city.
Nothing escaped his predatory gaze.
If Alaric investigated, he'd have the answers in no time.
Alaric pressed his lips into a thin, white line, his expression downright murderous.
He didn't know what was wrong with him, but hearing his nephew profess his love for Ivy made a suffocating, acidic rage boil over in his chest.
Suddenly, Ivy ran over and stopped him. "Old Man, Stella said the school gave them a gardening project, and she wants us to do it together."
The phrase 'Old Man' made a vein throb violently in Alaric's temple. His face turned an incredibly ugly shade of dark.
"What did you just call me?"
Ivy shrugged, offering a completely unapologetic explanation.
"You said I couldn't call you Mr. Foster anymore. I didn't know what else to call you, so I went with that."
She was doing it completely on purpose.
He was the one who ignored her when she called him 'Darling' before.
Using his first name felt entirely too intimate.
So, she decided to age him up a few decades just to piss him off.
Ivy felt a surge of smug satisfaction.
Alaric was dead silent.
