Elena and Stella were the only ones in the living room.
Seeing him walk in, Elena immediately stood up. "Alaric, you're home."
She walked over, using the child as an excuse to bridge the gap.
"Stella was so well-behaved today. She even taught me a nursery rhyme."
Alaric's expression was grim.
Seeing no sign of Ivy, he asked coldly, "Where is Ivy?"
"Oh?"
Elena feigned ignorance, glancing around the room.
"I haven't really seen her since dinner. I don't know where she went."
She was hoping to paint Ivy as an irresponsible caretaker who was neglecting the child, aiming to get her fired.
Instead, Alaric assumed she was severely injured and hiding in her room crying after being wrongfully fired by his family.
She had to be upstairs.
He glanced at his daughter and, ignoring Elena completely, headed straight for the stairs.
Elena hurriedly followed him.
He stopped on the first landing and turned to look at her, his gaze chilling enough to make her blood run cold.
"What do you think you're doing?"
Startled, she awkwardly took a step back. "N-Nothing, I just... have you eaten? Because if you haven't—"
"Dr. Sinclair."
He cut her off, his tone laced with ice.
"Remember your place. You are not the lady of this house. Do not speak to me as if you are."
He was well aware of the woman's blatant infatuation.
And he had zero intention of indulging it.
The only reason he had allowed her to treat Ivy in the first place was that having a female doctor seemed more appropriate.
It was clearly time to find a new one.
Stung by his ruthless rejection and utter lack of warmth.
A sharp pain pierced her chest, and humiliation washed over her face.
"I... I apologize!"
She bowed her head.
Without sparing her another glance, he turned and continued up the stairs.
