Elara had been planning to take Gillian and Mabel to Capital Planet. After everything that had just come out, the Outer Planet was looking a lot safer.

“Let’s get out of here first,” Merrick said. His face gave nothing away. He put his arm around Gillian and led her out of the warship’s holding block.

The same suspicion had been circling in his head. If it was true, Capital Planet was in worse shape than any of them had imagined. But that was a fight for another day. Right now, locking down the Outer Planet was all that mattered.

Gillian stepped out and spotted Freya heading toward them.

“Gillian, you’re okay.” Freya closed the distance fast and grabbed both her hands, looking her over from head to toe. Then she squeezed her cheeks. “You’ve lost weight. I’m cooking for you later.”

“Thanks, Freya.” Warmth settled in Gillian’s chest. She had two older sisters, both loving her like this.

Freya let go, snapped into a Legion salute, and reported, “Commander, Blue Phoenix tracked ten thousand scale parasites. Nine thousand nine hundred of them scattered across contaminated zones. A hundred disappeared. The vanishing point is under the Naiad River.”

Gillian felt her pulse kick. That had to be the nest.

“Lily, let me see that thing on your wrist. What’s got you smiling like that?” Ruby watched Lily bounce over and narrowed her eyes. “Did Mom give you another giant bowl of purge concentrate?”

If she did, I should’ve gone too.

The words “giant bowl of purge concentrate” made every flower beast within earshot stop what they were doing and turn toward Lily, licking their lips.

“Ruby, I wish,” Lily said. “You didn’t see her face. She was so pale. I didn’t even bring it up.”

The flower beasts deflated and went back to poking at whatever was in front of them.

“Then why are you so happy?” Ruby asked. “Camilla’s legs grew back?”

Lily touched the wrist terminal on her arm, and the black lily in her hair gave a little shake. “Dad Merrick gave me this.”

Ruby leaned in and squinted at it, and the corner of her mouth tugged up. “Adrian dropped off a whole crate of these. One for everybody. See? I’ve got one too.”

That is it? This little band thing?

Lily’s petals practically wilted. “Everybody got one?” she asked.

Ruby nodded. “You want me to add you to the group? Adrian set up a StarChat for the Flora Squad. You’re the only one not in it.”

Lily joined the chat and stared at the screen, still processing. All three hundred flower beasts were already there. Even Camilla. So she wasn’t special after all.

But the sting faded fast, and the smile came back. This was better. If they all had new identities, they could really build something here.

Lily had already picked up on how different they were from the 9th Legion beastmen. The flower beasts learned faster. Their genes ran cleaner.

She was two years old and already fighting at peak combat level for Wasteland City, and she wasn’t even fully grown yet. That wasn’t normal, and she knew it.

“Lily, what are you thinking about?” Ruby waved a hand in front of her face. “You spaced out.”

“I was thinking about those damn bugs,” Lily said. “What if they come back tonight?”

“We don’t have to wait,” Ruby said. “Three hundred of us go now. We’ll finish this before dark.”

She stretched and rolled her shoulders. She’d already gotten everyone ready. Even if the bugs hit again tonight, the squad would be back in time.

“Yeah, you’re right.” Lily grinned at her. “Let’s move. If we push, we can pull all eighty-plus taint cores before tonight.”

Ruby nodded. “Let’s get it done and get back.”

Lily filed the mission request with the Legion right away. She’d checked. She was the only captain in the Flora Squad. Even Ruby was just the vice captain. So she was still the only one.

The Sovereign Guard picked up the Flora Squad’s request fast.

Adrian let out a low whistle. “These flower beasts don’t mess around!”
