Gillian had been holding her breath, and Merrick had too. They’d figured there couldn’t be that many of these things, and now they were staring at a field of half-formed crimson hides.
Merrick’s smile turned cold. “All this time, right under the Legion’s nose. A full spread, and they got bigger every day.”
Gillian raised both palms, and her white healing psionic power poured into a glowing sphere. She pulled a coil of black taint liquid from the cryogold tank behind the aircraft, and the white sphere slowly grayed to concentrate.
Merrick tapped the aircraft and kicked the gray sphere apart. A fine rain scattered across the field.
When he dropped down beside her, two more spheres were already rising behind him. Playing delivery man didn’t bother him.
The gray purge rain kept falling, and the flower beasts below stretched out their bodies, the roots they’d lost surging back thick and strong.
The blood masses curled as tight as they could, but the gray drops ate through everything, punching holes through their shells and boiling them alive. When they tried to crawl, roots slammed them back into the circle of blooms, closing in around them.
The rain stopped, and every flower beast turned their faces toward Gillian.
“Mom, Mom. That rain was perfect,” they called out.
Gillian waved back and looked out at the field of rotting meat, and the knot she’d been carrying in her chest finally came loose. The second it did, her legs gave out, and she dropped onto the pile of blackstone.
Merrick caught her arm. “Gillian, go rest. Lily’s dragging back twenty more crimson hides. You’re not done yet.”
She started to say she was fine, but a warmth rolled through her belly and washed the exhaustion clean.
She pressed a hand to her stomach, and her whole body eased. Some color crept back into her face.
“Okay,” she said.

As they dropped, a small figure stood framed in the landing window, her white hair stirring even with no wind.
Adrian watched Lily standing there and let out a quiet breath. It was bad. Over sixty cores cleared, and every single flower beast inside had been eaten.
He just hoped the last twenty holes still had someone breathing. He walked over and stopped next to her.
“Lily, you wanna sit down for a bit?” he asked, talking to her like an equal, not a kid.
“I’m fine,” Lily said.
She was young, but her face had gone too quiet this whole run. Her small jaw stayed locked as she watched the aircraft touch down, dust blowing across the landing zone.
Her wrist terminal buzzed. Lily looked down and tapped the screen open.
“Adrian, Dad and Mom got rid of all those blood masses,” she said, a touch of relief slipping into her voice.
The Flora Squad StarChat lit up with a video Ruby had just posted: the gray purge rain eating through the blood masses.
Lily watched it without a sound, and when it ended, some of the bloodlust coiled inside her finally let go. Her face relaxed a fraction, and the black lily in her hair slowly bloomed.
Adrian caught the shift and let his eyes warm. “Mrs. Cole’s waiting for you.”
“Yeah. I’ll finish this fast.” Lily turned and walked out. The rest of the crimson hides were getting dragged back and put down. If those things wanted to farm her kind, they were about to learn what it felt like to be the ones hunted.
Those eighty S-class taint cores, the worst ones-without the flower beasts, Merrick would’ve had to flood them with live bait just to thin out the contamination.
Gillian frowned. “S-class taint cores are the most unstable. Maybe the flower beasts fought back when the parasites came for them, and that’s what kicked the taint into active mode.”
Merrick shook his head. “Or it’s the flower beasts themselves. They died, and whatever makes them different turned the dormant taint active.”
Either way, the 9th Legion had been played for idiots. They’d nearly dumped tens of
