Gillian was dead set on pushing the flower beasts’ levels up. Fear always boils down to not having enough firepower, and if she had two hundred eighty level 9 flower beasts, what did she have to be scared of?
Merrick had nearly reached the Naiad River. He stared out at the still water from a distance. It lay there flat and quiet, like it was waiting for something.
He didn’t bring the Chelone Warship down, just held it hovering steady above the river.
“Dad, are we going down?” Lily asked. She gazed at the glass-smooth surface, and something cold flickered through her chest.
“Hold on,” Merrick said. A faint smile tugged at his mouth. “The show’s about to start.”
Lily didn’t get it, but she kept quiet and waited. That was when movement in the distance caught her eye.
A group of beastman soldiers on aircraft was tearing toward them, fast and low like dark birds. Behind them came a whole wave of tainted beasts, huge and twisted, their growls rumbling through the air as they charged.
Lily’s eyes went wide. “Dad, you’re using the tainted beast herd to test what’s down there?” she asked.
He can do that?
“Commander, we’ve pulled the beasts in,” Dominic called out.
“Push them closer to the river,” Merrick said.
He watched the beasts still holding back from the water’s edge and told his men to drag them in tighter.
“Yes, sir.”
Dominic took the chance to show off a little. He’d felt it too-these things wanted nothing to do with the river.
He slowed his aircraft to a crawl and let himself dangle just ahead of the pack. Even through his sealed bio-armor mask, the reek of rot from those beasts was thick enough to choke on.

They still wouldn’t commit. He was practically waving his backside in their faces, and they wouldn’t bite.
The Naiad River came up fast, and he had to pull up. But the beasts weren’t ready to quit either. Fresh meat this easy to find was too rare to walk away from.
“Commander, these things are scared to death of the river too,” Dominic said.
“Use the Rage Serum,” Merrick told him.
“Already on it.” Dominic yanked the serum from his wrist terminal and flung it behind him.
The tainted beasts’ eyes blazed red, and this time they charged without thinking, without slowing down.
Dominic dropped his aircraft and skimmed the river’s surface, and the beasts plunged right in after him.
The second the water hit them, most of them snapped awake and scrambled for the bank in blind panic, ditching the hunt completely. They just ran.
That was something. These were level 6 rhino beasts, some of the meanest contaminated animals in the region, and they wouldn’t even touch the water.
Merrick tapped the White Griffin on the head. “White Griffin, get to work.”
The little white griffin dropped to the riverbank and swept the area. “Environment normal. The herd consists of taint-contaminated rhino beasts. Naiad River readings are normal.”
The data didn’t give him what he wanted, which meant he’d have to send in the clerics.
Mandy and the others were ferried over by Dominic and set down at the river’s edge. The White Griffin had already cleared the area, and even the tainted beasts had bolted through without a problem.
The team touched down on solid black earth, and nothing stirred.
“Ms. Evans, you’re up,” Merrick said.
“Yes, Commander.” Mandy heard the order through her wrist terminal and nodded at the nine others with her.
Their purification psionic power poured into the ground without holding back. The aircraft beside them were packed with blackstone, and that unlimited energy supply was exactly what pushed their levels higher. They burned through everything they had, soaked up more, and
