Merrick heard Gillian out, but he didn’t jump to any conclusions. Instead, he asked about something else.

“Gillian, Adrian told me you’ve been pushing the flower beasts’ levels up hard. That true?” he asked.

“You think I shouldn’t have?” Her voice came out calm. This wasn’t something she’d done on impulse.

Merrick looked at her and shook his head. “You made the call. I trust you had your reasons.”

Gillian blinked. All the explanations she’d lined up suddenly had nowhere to go. “You’re not mad?”

He pulled her closer, one arm around her waist, and thought it over for a few seconds. “The flower beasts are aggressive, yeah. But they learn fast. If we guide them the right way, I think they’ll give us something back we didn’t expect,” he said.

She smiled at that, a real one. “You actually mean that?”

“I do. Lily’s exceptional.”

Merrick wasn’t the type to hand out praise, but the kid’s strength had genuinely earned his

respect.

Before today, Gillian had still held back a little on how far she’d push the flower beasts. She’d figured teaching them control would take forever. But love was the one thing that, when poured onto a seed, actually made it bloom.

Her love had soaked into these kids, and their love had poured right back.

She opened her palm and pulled a cryogold sphere from her wrist terminal. “Merrick, look,” she said.

Merrick glanced at it. “Yeah? What about it?”

He reached for it, but she pulled it back and pushed her sleeve up, baring her whole arm. The gold sphere hovered above her skin, catching the light.

“Gillian, what are you doing?”

Before Merrick could get another word out, she cracked the sphere open and poured the gray

concentrate straight onto her arm. It pooled and streaked down her skin. His hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.

“Gillian, that’s purge concentrate! Are you trying to lose your arm?”

Merrick freaked out. He remembered the first time she’d opened that cryogold box and the purge had eaten straight through her. Even with the babies helping her now, this wasn’t something anyone messed with.

Gillian said, “Merrick, relax. I’m fine. Look.”

The words landed, and nothing happened. No corrosion, no burning. The concentrate sank into her skin and disappeared.

Merrick turned her arm over, checking it again and again before he let himself believe what he was seeing.

“Gillian, what happened? How can you absorb it now?” His thumb skimmed over her skin, rough and careful.

What changed her body like this? The babies? The flower beasts?

His mind was still racing when Gillian looked past him, toward the water towers.

Ruby was up there, watching. The flower beasts sat waiting, calm and beautiful and lethal, and every one of them had chosen her.

Merrick followed her gaze and understood. The flower beasts had done this.

Gillian’s voice came out with a slight tremble. “It’s a gift from them. They wanted me to be able to absorb the purge like they do, so I could level up and protect the people I care about.”

She opened her palm and let her psionic power flare. She’d woken up a level 8 cleric. The speed of it still didn’t feel real.

“You’ve got some serious luck on your side.” There was no jealousy in Merrick’s voice, just pure, simple happiness for her.

He lifted her hand and pressed a kiss to it. Knowing she’d been given something like this meant more to him than any treasure ever could.

“Merrick, having all of you is my luck.”

Gillian’d been given so much more in this life than she’d ever had in the last one, and it had made her greedy. She didn’t want to lose a single person she loved.
