“Gillian, message Freya’s account. Tell her you’re scared and you don’t know what to do,” Merrick said.

Gillian caught on fast. If they were running a setup, she’d run one right back.

She typed into Freya’s chat, “Freya, where are you? I’m scared. Are you saying there’s a crimson hide near me? Even if I ran, where would I go?”

Just then, a thunderous crash came from Lily’s side. The Griffin Warship, the most advanced ship in Wasteland City, was ripped out of the dirt by the flower beasts’ roots.

The hull was crawling with scale parasites, and the flower beasts tore through them.

Lily forced the main hatch open, and a black river of parasites poured out and slammed into the crowd. These were higher-level, but they still couldn’t match the flower beasts’ brutality. The swarm was carved apart in moments.

Lily let out a sharp cry. “Aunt Freya! It’s Aunt Freya!”

Wrapped in white roots was Freya. Gillian shot to her feet. Half of Freya’s body had been chewed away. She was barely holding on.

“Lily, get her to me now! I’m on my way,” Gillian shouted.

“Yes, Mom,” Lily called back.

Freya’s injuries were catastrophic. If her chest hadn’t still been rising and falling, she would’ve looked dead.

Merrick pulled Gillian onto the aircraft and headed for the warship.

Every second was agony until she finally saw Freya, and her eyes went red.

The flesh had been eaten off parts of her body down to the bone, thick, crusted blood caked over her wounds, and half of that beautiful face was gone.

Gillian poured her healing psionic power into Freya over and over. She pushed and pushed until the flesh began to grow back, still raw and bloody, but filling in the hollowed-out areas.

Once Freya’s heartbeat steadied, Merrick grabbed Gillian’s hand, pulled the spent blackstone from her grip, and pressed fresh pieces into her palm.

“Gillian, Freya’s out of danger. Save your strength. They found Elara, Sylas, and Tris too.”

Gillian’s head snapped up. Merrick had a video link open with Adrian, and behind him. three crimson hides had halfway swallowed Elara, Sylas, and Tristan.

“Mrs. Cole, I’m bringing them in now. You have to hold it together, or—” Adrian stopped. He didn’t have to finish.

Gillian steadied herself. They were about fifty miles outside the taint base. “Adrian, bring them. I’m fine.”

She looked up at Merrick. “Merrick, I need a lot of blackstone.”

“I’ll get it now.” He moved fast.

The floor around her was already littered with drained stones. Without her skill, Freya would’ve been gone.

But half the blackstone on the warship was already burned through, and that wasn’t going to be enough for three more.

Gillian stacked blackstones around Freya’s bed, and when Freya opened her eyes, she saw Gillian sitting beside her, silent and still.

“Gillian.” Freya’s voice was a rasp.

Gillian snapped to attention and took her outstretched hand. “Freya, I’m here. You’re okay,” she said.

“Gillian, you have to get out. The 9th Legion has been compromised. Don’t trust anyone right now.” The memory of that night was still clawing at her. “If something feels wrong, kill it. Better to be wrong than dead.”

“Freya, slow down. Tell me what happened that night.” Gillian could see she’d seen something.

Then she remembered the message telling her to run. “Did you send me a message today? Telling me to run?” she asked.
