Gillian crossed the room and pulled Elara over to Maddox. “Elara, I’ve got a lot of questions. Can you help me sort them out? I think some things just need to be said out loud,” she said.

Elara looked down at Maddox in the metal case, bent over, and brushed her fingers across his face. A cold smile crossed her lips. “Ask me anything. I’ll tell you what I know, Gillian,” she said.

The second her hand touched him, something dark moved behind Maddox’s eyes.

Elara, you’ve really gotten comfortable selling me out.

“Elara, when Merrick’s mother died, were you already on Capital Planet?” Gillian asked.

Elara nodded. “I arrived before Skylar passed. I only met her once. She was a gentle person.”

Even Elara, cold as she was, softened her voice at the name.

The two males in the room, both of them hard and sharp, seemed to hold their breath and listen.

Merrick hadn’t known Elara had met his mother, and something in his face shifted.

Gillian caught Maddox’s expression.

Was that nostalgia? Skylar must have been something.

She pulled her eyes off him and kept going. Something still didn’t sit right. There were holes in the story.

“Elara, how did Skylar die?” she asked.

Elara sighed, “A fire. She burned to death.”

For the last hundred years, the Outer Planet had stagnated, and all the best technology from both worlds had pooled on Capital Planet. The tech there was thousands of times more advanced. A fire should’ve been extinguished in seconds. No one burned to death.

“No one tried to save her?” Gillian couldn’t accept it.

Elara’s hand, which had been stroking Maddox’s face, slowly curled around his throat. “You’ll have to ask him. He was the only one there.”

Maddox’s expression stayed cool, and Elara let go. She’d never met anyone with a tighter

Elara wasn’t done. She leaned in. “Tell me why. Why did you stand there and watch Skylar burn alive?” she demanded.

From this angle, the red puncture marks the crimson hides had left on her skin were visible.

Maddox’s cold gaze fell on them, his eyes widening sharply. “The wounds on your neck. Where did you get those?” he asked.

“You’ve seen these before?” Elara’s icy eyes narrowed. “Not many people have. Where did you see them, Master?”

Master? She still dares to call me that.

Maddox ignored her question completely and made a demand, his face blank. “Release my body. Let me go, and I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”

Merrick’s mouth curved into a cold smile. He walked to the metal case, picked up a syringe, and drove it into Maddox’s arm without hesitating.

The liquid spread, and Maddox’s rigid muscles slowly unlocked.

Merrick watched him with something dark and frozen behind his eyes, like he was trying to see straight through him.

When the injection was done, he grabbed Maddox by the chest and hauled him up like he weighed nothing.

“Why did you stand there and watch my mother burn alive?” The question came out as a low, dangerous growl.

Maddox’s body was trembling from the drug, his strength crawling back alongside a raw, electric ache that made every nerve fire.

His breathing turned ragged. Then, like a provoked animal, he shoved Merrick back hard enough to make him stumble.

Maddox growled, “Because that wasn’t Skylar.”
