Maddox, did you truly care about nothing at all? Did you just stand by and watch all the hatred I felt for you over these years like a mere onlooker?
Merrick pressed his palm hard against the metal tabletop. The smooth surface sank deep beneath his fingers without a sound. His chest rose and fell sharply, heavy with sorrow.
After a long pause, Merrick gently wiped the wetness from his cheeks.
He would not let Maddox play the lone hero.
Who does Maddox think he is? Does he really believe I will be grateful to him for bearing every burden alone? I will never be thankful.
Right then, his wrist terminal buzzed with an incoming call.
It was a message from Maddox.
They had cut off contact for years, only reconnecting for this joint operation.
Merrick’s face turned grave the second he read the text. His heart slammed painfully against his ribs when he spotted the word “danger”.
Merrick muttered under his breath, “Gillian.”
He immediately ordered the crew to push the Chelone Warship to full speed and race to the location at all costs.
Gillian, hold on for me.
Merrick shut down the terminal. He pushed the fourteen-year-old tragedy out of his mind and closed his eyes. When he opened them again, all traces of grief were gone.
He was once more the unshakable Merrick.
After Merrick departed, Tristan grew distracted while clearing away the parasite corpses. He ached to follow along.
Camilla noticed his fluffy tail hanging limply on the ground. She stretched out her root tendrils and lifted the tail carefully.
“Tristan, what’s wrong?” she asked. “Why won’t it bloom anymore?”

She had thought she was being sneaky, but Tristan’s beast ears shot straight up in shock.
Tristan had reached level 8 and broken the genetic side effects of the regression serum.
Even so, the drug lingered in his system. From time to time, his ears and tail would pop out against his will.
His resting tail snapped upright in an instant.
When he saw it was Camilla, he held back his usual sharp retort.
There was no sense arguing with a toddler who still picked dirt off the ground. It would make him look petty.
Once the last scaled parasite was dead, Camilla grew bored. She reached out again and tugged his pale pink fox tail.
Tristan decided the little one needed a lesson. A beastman’s tail was not something anyone could grab freely.
He lifted her right off the ground.
Tristan said firmly, “Camilla, good little girls do not touch a male’s tail out of nowhere. Especially you, a young female.”
Camilla could not understand why Tristan was mad, but his stern tone scared her.
She pointed quickly behind him. “Tristan, watch out for parasites!”
She hoped to distract him so she could slip away.
But Tristan’s eight thick tails coiled and crushed the empty air behind him. He never shifted his body an inch.
Tristan frowned. “Camilla, lying makes you a bad kid. Are you asking for a spanking today?”
Camilla blinked hard.
Glamour Fox is too hard to fool. Lily, come quickly and save me.
Sylas watched the two tussling and smiled at Tristan’s childish temper. He stepped forward to pull Camilla away when a sharp pain stabbed his chest. His breathing turned ragged.
He stumbled backward several steps before steadying himself. When he lifted his head, everything around him turned blood-red.

A savage rage welled up inside Sylas. He spun around and ran toward the medical bay. He had taken sedatives; how could his genes suddenly go haywire?
He dared not stay where he stood. He needed more sedative medicine in the infirmary. But the moment he stepped into the nearest medical room, a brutal pain exploded at the base of his skull.
He lost consciousness and crumpled to the floor.
A long-hidden figure stepped out and dragged his body away without a sound.
Tristan still held Camilla by the collar. He was about to tell Sylas that the flower beasts were far too spoiled.
He turned around, only to find Sylas had vanished from where he had been standing.
Tristan frowned. “Camilla, did you see where Sylas went?”
Camilla nodded earnestly. “When you were holding me up, I saw him rush off. He looked really sick. I can show you which way he went.”
“You’re not lying to me, are you?” Tristan sighed, staring at the sweet-faced little girl.
