Elara said casually, “They kept yelling that Commander Cole has triggered major unrest by killing a Phoenixkin from Capital Planet. They demanded he turn himself in right away. I have listened to that same speech so many times my ears are practically ringing.”

Gillian frowned. “Will this get you into trouble?”

Freezing them was one thing. Who carried out the act would make all the difference. If Elara took the blame, the consequences would not be the same as if Gillian had acted.

Elara shrugged and sat down beside Gillian without a trace of worry. “It will be fine. Once the whole truth comes out, the worst punishment Commander Cole can give me is a temporary suspension from duty.”

Gillian insisted firmly, “Be serious. If this is going to damage your career, unfreeze them right now. I will handle them myself.”

Elara shook her head. “I have already frozen them solid; they will hold me responsible no matter what. If you release them now, you will only make the mess worse. Once all the evidence is public, the Department of Justice will not find any grounds to punish us.”

Gillian sat back down. Elara was completely right.

Elara softened her tone. “I have formed a core bond with Maddox. He will not let me stay in Wasteland City for long. I will leave sooner or later. I am the perfect person to take this risk.”

Gillian asked quietly, “Is there any way to break a core bond?”

Elara said, “Only the blood of the Five-Colored Cicada works before the bond takes hold. Once sealed, there is no undoing it.

“Drop this topic for now. What will Commander Cole do next? Will he show everyone the parasite corpses?”

Gillian could do nothing to change Elara’s fate.

A thought suddenly crossed her mind.

White flame burned away Sylas’ mental poison. Could it also burn a core bond?

She pushed the thought aside; this was not the right moment to discuss it.

Gillian said, “I have sent Merrick all the footage. It includes our treatment for the soldiers’ scale

rot, plus recordings of veterans who could not be cured and chose to dive into the taint core and detonate themselves.”

She stared at Merrick’s figure on the screen, hope rising in her chest. “I know we will clear the 9th Legion’s name.”

Elara nodded firmly. “We will.”

Gillian turned back to business. “Did you and George catch every signal operator Omar set up?”

Elara replied, “We did. Not a single one got away.”

Lily had been silently watching the live broadcast. She suddenly lashed the screen with her root tendril in anger, her cheeks flushed bright red.

Gillian hurried over to her. “Lily, what is wrong?”

Lily grabbed her arm, her voice thick with sorrow. “They are saying such terrible things. Why do so many people wish Dad Merrick would die?”

Tears welled up in her beautiful eyes.

She continued, “They even hope the taint blows Wasteland City off the map. They call us rats living in sewers who spill filth everywhere and ruin the whole Outer Planet’s environment. Dad Merrick is the one protecting this land. How can they lie so shamelessly?”

Gillian wiped away her tears gently. “Do not let their cruelty upset you. If you let their hatred get under your skin, they win.”

Lily sniffled. “Dad Merrick looks fierce sometimes, but I know he is a good man. It makes me furious to hear them talk about him like this.”

It hurt Gillian to see the little girl grieve for Merrick, yet early hardships would only make Lily

stronger.

Gillian said, “Even within Wasteland City, there are cruel people. All we can do is stand firm and protect the justice we believe in.”

Elara lifted Lily into her arms. “Lily, the world is full of unreasonable hatred. You must learn to see people clearly as you grow up.

“If anyone annoys you, I can freeze them solid, okay?”

She waved her hand, and soft snowflakes drifted down in front of Lily, cold to the touch.
