"I won't overstay my welcome."
Dominic stood up, his tone stiff as he informed Warren. "As for Julian and Zoe's wedding, we'll discuss the details another day."
Warren's face was livid. His Adam's apple bobbed a few times, but in the end, he could only offer a rigid nod.
In this round, both he and Dominic had lost disastrously.
The grand eldest son of the Prescott family should have been a prized asset, traded for a powerful alliance through an elite marriage. Now, he was forced into a binding tie with the Vaughan family, who were already relatives. Meanwhile, Dominic, who prided himself on his shrewd calculations and had intended to use the Miller banquet to climb the social ladder, had also ended up grasping at nothing.
"Ah."
The moment the Vaughan family disappeared out the door, Julian let out a suppressed, primal roar like a trapped beast.
"Dad, I absolutely refuse to marry that fat cow." His eyes were bloodshot as he looked at Warren pleadingly. "Just looking at her face makes me want to throw up. Besides, this marriage does absolutely nothing for my career."
"Shut up."
Warren barked sharply, glaring fiercely at his son. "Do you think I want this? Who told you to be so incompetent and screw up this massively at such a critical moment?"
"It's all Phoenix's fault." Julian's face twisted, grinding his teeth. "Mavis clearly set it up for me to be with Meredith. But the second I stepped into the room, someone knocked me out. Phoenix was definitely pulling the strings from the shadows."
Warren narrowed his eyes, his gaze shifting toward the tea room, looking incredibly sinister. "Phoenix's return this time is bad news. She's here to take revenge for us sending her to prison back then."
"That ungrateful bitch. As a daughter of the Prescott family, she should have the decency to sacrifice herself for the family's sake. Otherwise... why did I bother bringing her back? To worship her like an ancestor?"
Nearby, Vanessa watched her husband and son in silence, listening to their endless curses against Phoenix.
If it were the past, caught deep in their biased web, she might not have found anything wrong with those words. But hearing them now, they felt as piercing as needles.
Phoenix was her biological daughter whom she had carried for nine months. She had suffered so much wandering outside. Returning to her true family should have meant a life of luxury, yet they had personally sent her to prison.
Now that she had survived four brutal years behind bars and returned home, she was met not with her family's attempts to make amends, but with bone-chilling malice. How sad and furious must she be on the inside?
