Prescott Group.
Ever since attending the Miller family banquet alongside Phoenix, Yolanda Young's name had spread like wildfire through the company.
The entire atmosphere in the marketing department had shifted overnight. The sound of blatant flattery echoed constantly. Everyone wanted to use Yolanda as a stepping stone to win the favor of the untouchable Ms. Prescott.
Unfortunately for them, Yolanda saw right through the charade. She ignored the sugar-coated bullets entirely, focusing only on doing her job and lightening Phoenix's load.
"Yolanda, take these documents and make ten copies for me."
A thick stack of files slammed onto the desk with a loud smack, the displaced air brushing against Yolanda's cheek. The deeply entitled tone of the command made her frown.
Yolanda took a deep breath and looked up at the arrogant woman standing in front of her—Crystal Sloane.
"Crystal, you are perfectly capable of handling these files yourself. Why are you pawning them off on me?"
Crystal raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms, a mocking smirk playing on her lips. "Yolanda, we're all colleagues here. Isn't helping each other out expected? Besides, wasn't running errands and making copies your main job before? What, now that you're the manager's little pet, you think you're too good for us?"
She didn't shout, but her voice was sharp enough for all the eavesdropping coworkers to hear clearly.
Listening to the surrounding whispers, a spark of anger flared in Yolanda's chest. "Crystal, I am incredibly grateful to Ms. Prescott for promoting me, and it's an honor to assist her. But that doesn't mean I'm going to throw her weight around, and it certainly doesn't mean you can treat me like your personal servant."
"If you have a problem with my work ethic, you are more than welcome to take it up with Ms. Prescott."
The fake smile on Crystal's face froze. She hadn't expected Yolanda, who used to be a complete pushover, to suddenly grow a spine.
But the marketing department was still the territory of the veterans. How could she let a rookie disrespect her?
"Wow, Yolanda, there's no need to take it there," Crystal said, her eyes darting around as she quickly swapped her arrogance for an expression of helpless victimization. "I just thought since we're all coworkers, we shouldn't let your promotion to executive assistant ruin our friendly dynamic."
"If you feel that helping me print a few papers is an insult to your dignity... then I apologize."
Saying that, Crystal lowered her head, looking exactly like someone who had been bullied into submission.
Yolanda's heart sank. This wasn't an apology at all. It was a strategic retreat designed to throw her to the wolves.
Predictably, the public opinion in the room shifted instantly.
"Yolanda, Crystal didn't mean anything by it. What's the big deal about making a few copies? Did you really have to blow up like that?"
"Yeah, she used to do this stuff all the time anyway. She knows the drill."
"Gets a promotion and suddenly thinks she's better than the manager..."
The seemingly calm reprimands from the coworkers were laced with biting malice, piercing into Yolanda like needles.
