"Crystal, I am officially informing you in my capacity as Ms. Prescott's Executive Assistant—you are fired." Yolanda stared straight into Crystal's eyes, her voice completely steady now. "Pack your things and leave the marketing department immediately. Stop disrupting our work."
Crystal's face drained of color, her humiliation morphing into sheer rage. "You... who the hell do you think you are? You're nothing but a—"
*Smack!*
A sharp, ringing slap cut off the rest of Crystal's insults.
Yolanda pulled back her stinging palm. The memory of slapping Phoebe at the Miller banquet flashed through her mind. She had the guts to strike the second young lady of the Prescott Family—why on earth would she hesitate to discipline an ordinary bully?
If she didn't establish dominance right now, the festering jealousy and resentment in this room would eventually devour her.
She had to send a clear message to everyone: in this position, she was the only one in charge.
"Get the hell out of here before I call security."
Crystal clutched her red, swelling cheek. She shot Yolanda one final, venomous glare, but didn't dare push her luck any further. Gritting her teeth, she spun around and stormed out.
Yolanda let out a long exhale, turned to Phoenix, and lowered her voice. "I'm sorry, Ms. Prescott. I embarrassed you."
Phoenix gave a slight nod, a flash of approval in her eyes. "You handled that perfectly. Remember this: anyone bullying my people is slapping me in the face."
"Rest assured, Ms. Prescott. It won't happen again," Yolanda promised, straightening her posture.
"Do you know how to drive?"
"Yes."
"Get ready. We're going somewhere."
"Right away!" Yolanda replied respectfully, the massive weight on her chest finally lifting. Thank God she had reacted fast enough. She hadn't let her boss down.
The moment Phoenix stepped back into her private office, the previously dead-silent bull pen erupted.
"Yolanda, that was amazing! That slap was exactly what she deserved!"
"Seriously, Crystal was just jealous of your promotion and trying to start something. Thank God Ms. Prescott had your back and put her in her place."
"Yolanda, please take care of us from now on!"
Listening to her coworkers' dizzying 180-degree shift in attitude, Yolanda offered a tight, polite smile.
She hadn't forgotten how quickly every single one of them had tried to throw her under the bus just five minutes ago.
...
Inside the office, Phoenix had barely sat down when Meredith's name flashed on her phone.
