Mavis narrowed her eyes, trying to see through the impenetrable man before her.
Who could have guessed that the worthless Lowery heir, the laughingstock of Cloudhaven, was actually a ravenous wolf in sheep's clothing? With Cloudhaven teetering on the edge, this beast was finally bearing his venomous fangs in the dark.
"Barrett, you promised to introduce me to the Highcrest elites. Does that offer still stand?"
Barrett exhaled a thick cloud of smoke, peering down at her through the haze. "Even though you messed up the Lumina Jewelry situation, considering your past efforts, I can give you this chance."
"Starting tomorrow, you are no longer Mavis Miller. You will take on the identity of 'Vivian Woodly,' representing the Osborne family of Highcrest to negotiate a partnership with the Millers."
Mavis's eyes lit up, a twisted smirk forming on her lips. "Barrett, that's a dangerous move. I just finished making a mortal enemy out of the Millers, and now you want me to march back in there as the Osborne family's representative? Are you hoping to get me killed?"
Barrett flicked his cigar ash dismissively. "As long as you carry the name of the Osborne family from Highcrest, even if you stood right in front of Thaddeus, he wouldn't dare touch a single hair on your head."
That was an undeniable fact.
The Osborne family of Highcrest sat at the absolute pinnacle of the Sovereign Circle's power structure. Even the Sterling family, who practically owned Cloudhaven, had to bow to the Osbornes. The only reason the Osbornes rarely bothered with Cloudhaven was because the pond was simply too small for their dragons.
But exactly who Barrett was "observing" on their behalf remained a mystery to Mavis.
Yet now, Barrett was clearly tired of playing the spectator. He planned to capitalize on the chaos to swallow the old legacy families—the Millers, the Prescotts, and his own Lowery family—while even snatching up rising stars like Lumina Jewelry.
But chewing through those powerhouses wouldn't be easy.
Take Lumina Jewelry, for example. Mavis thought she had Meredith firmly under her thumb, but Phoenix had suddenly crashed the party, tearing their carefully laid traps to shreds with absolute brutality.
"I'll remember this favor, Barrett," Mavis purred, standing up and swaying her hips as she approached his wheelchair.
However, just as she tried to slip smoothly into his lap, Barrett shoved her away without an ounce of hesitation.
"Mavis, know your place," Barrett's eyes were as cold as frost. "To me, you are nothing more than a useful pawn. You want to be my woman? You're not qualified."
Mavis's pupils shrank, humiliation and embarrassment surging wildly in her chest. Between her looks, her figure, and her cunning, she was top-tier among Cloudhaven's socialites. How dare this man tell her to her face that she wasn't good enough?
