Knock, knock, knock.
The heavy sound interrupted their conversation.
The two exchanged a look across the room before Thaddeus spoke up. "Come in."
The thick double doors were pushed open, and Mavis led The Osborne Family's negotiation team into the room.
Her high heels clicked aggressively against the polished marble floor. Her posture was so hostile it looked less like a peace talk and more like a victory parade.
Phoenix tapped her fingers on the table, a playful smirk dancing on her lips.
Looking at the proud peacock strutting in, she found the whole situation hilarious. Mavis still had no idea that her supposed trump card had already gone up in smoke.
If she knew, she wouldn't be walking with her spine so straight.
"Well, if it isn't Miss Prescott," Mavis said, casually pulling off her sunglasses and offering a fake, exaggerated smile. "This is a closed-door negotiation between our two families. As an outsider, isn't it a bit against the rules for you to be sitting here?"
"Unfortunately for you, my current title is the official representative of the Miller family," Phoenix replied, throwing her hands up in mock helplessness. "What can I say? I'm Meredith's best friend. Now that her family has a treacherous turncoat, I have to step in and hold down the fort."
At the word "turncoat," Mavis's fake smile shattered, her eyes turning dark.
She snapped her gaze to Thaddeus, her tone dripping with condescension. "Mr. Miller, is this how you treat your guests? Or do you simply have zero respect for The Osborne Family?"
Thaddeus scoffed. "'Our' Osborne Family? When did you change your last name, Mavis? If Miss Prescott shouldn't be here, then what right does a traitor like you have to stand at this table?"
Mavis's gaze turned icy. She planted both hands firmly on the conference table, leaning forward as she spat out every word. "Because I have The Osborne Family backing me! Because I am their representative, and I have my fingers wrapped right around your company's throat!"
Her words echoed in the room, dripping with arrogance. Anyone who didn't know better would think she owned The Osborne Family herself.
Normally, a provocation like this would have someone slamming the table in rage. But strangely, both Thaddeus and Phoenix remained completely unfazed.
Their calmness was so unnatural it made Mavis feel a sudden twinge of unease.
