Barrett's face immediately turned a sickly shade of gray, a flash of humiliated darkness crossing his eyes.
It was obvious these two were determined to strip away his disguise, reducing him to a laughingstock and embarrassing him in front of Highcrest's elite.
"Phoenix, Pierce. What a picture-perfect couple you two make," he forced a cold smirk, his tone venomous. "However, tonight is Draco Enterprises' main event. Acting like you own the place seems terribly disrespectful to the real hosts."
Pierce tilted his head, his gaze softening as it swept over Phoenix, a playful smile pulling at his lips. "Phoenix, it seems Barrett is a man who respects the rules. He knows how to act like a good guest and keep his head down."
Phoenix let out a soft laugh, naturally looping her arm through Pierce's, casually playing along. "Let's go take a seat then. We shouldn't make things any harder for him. After all, he worked so hard pretending to be a cripple, and we just blew his cover. He must be feeling pretty sensitive right now."
The two of them flirted effortlessly, completely ignoring him, their words landing like physical slaps across Barrett's face.
Barrett narrowed his eyes, a viper-like viciousness churning within them.
He had stayed in the shadows for years, thinking his crippled facade would let him manipulate the board from the dark. He never expected his trump card to be torn to shreds so casually by Phoenix and Pierce.
Standing to the side, Warren Prescott stared at Barrett's legs in total disbelief. "Barrett... you were faking your injury this whole time?"
"What, surprised?" Barrett shot him a sidelong glare, scoffing coldly. "Know your place, Warren. Right now, you're nothing but a lapdog at my feet. Don't go getting any ideas above your station. Otherwise... I'll make sure you die a very ugly death."
Warren's chest tightened, a cold sweat breaking out across his back.
The terrifying realization of swimming with sharks washed over him. A man who could endure pretending to be crippled for years—just how deep and terrifying were his schemes?
Perhaps from the very beginning, his recruitment after hitting rock bottom was entirely part of Barrett's grand design.
No wonder a supposed 'crippled outcast' held so many incredible resources, even managing to secure an invitation from a powerhouse like Draco Enterprises.
"Phoenix!"
A bright, cheerful voice broke the standoff. Macy Monroe hurried over in her heels, excitedly waving at Phoenix.
"Macy." A genuine smile reached Phoenix's eyes. She immediately unhooked her arm from Pierce and stepped forward to pull Macy into a tight hug.
