Carter was upstairs discussing business when a sudden surge of unease gripped his chest.
The feeling grew more intense by the second. He abruptly stood up. "Raymond, I need to step out for a minute."
He hurried out of the room. Just as he reached the ground floor, he heard Pamela's panicked scream.
Carter broke into a sprint and dove into the pool without a single second of hesitation.
"Hurry, push the water out of her lungs!"
Pamela frantically shouted instructions while dialing for help. Emma coughed up some water, but she remained completely unresponsive.
"If she's not waking up, start CPR right now!"
Pamela continued to direct him. Carter knelt by Emma's side and immediately leaned down to breathe for her.
When Percy came downstairs and saw the scene, his hands instantly balled into fists.
He marched over, his lips pressed tight, his knuckles turning white from the strain.
"If you don't know what you're doing, let me handle it. I'm trained in first aid."
Seeing that Emma still wasn't waking up, Percy stepped forward and snapped.
Carter froze. Was he doing it wrong?
"Get up. If you keep hesitating and something happens to her, I'll—"
Percy shoved him aside. Carter stumbled back but didn't retaliate, nor did he say a word.
He didn't care about the intimacy of the rescue; he was just absolutely terrified that Emma might actually die.
He bit his lip hard. Just as Percy leaned down to give her a breath, Emma's arm limply lifted into the air. Her fingers weakly curled around the fabric of Carter's shirt.
Before she could even speak, she passed out again.
But Carter understood perfectly.
He immediately stood up and scooped her into his arms. Percy shouted in frantic confusion, "Carter, are you actually trying to kill her?"
"She must have been drugged with something like ether."
He recognized her brief moment of consciousness; it was the exact same state she'd been in when waking up from anesthesia after her surgery.
She hadn't passed out from drowning. It was drugs.
