Carter fell into a heavy silence. Suddenly, the lounge door opened.
Emma was still groggy, leaning heavily against the doorframe, her eyes flashing with pure annoyance.
"Am I a piece of property to you?"
She shot Percy a look of completely undisguised disgust.
Then she shifted her gaze to Carter, her expression unreadable but sharp.
Carter's chest instantly tightened. He scrambled to explain, "Emma, I didn't—"
Slam.
The lounge door was shut in his face, leaving Carter totally rebuffed.
He awkwardly touched his nose before turning a glacial glare onto Percy.
"Get the hell out."
Percy pressed his lips together, wanting to argue, but the murderous chill radiating from Carter's eyes made him shrink back. He turned and scurried away.
Carter stared at the closed door, raising his hand to knock.
"Emma, how are you feeling?"
He frowned, desperate to explain himself. He realized he had made a massive mistake—he should have immediately shut Percy down the second he opened his mouth.
But before he could get an apology out, the door swung open again.
The doctor stepped out, pushing his glasses up his nose.
"Mr. Harrington, she's fallen asleep again. We detected trace amounts of ether in her system, but she shows no signs of severe poisoning."
Carter's gaze turned dark. The doctor continued, "She likely inhaled it by accident. However, this type of drug is strictly regulated. It's impossible to obtain through normal channels."
"Right. How is she physically?" Carter asked, peering anxiously into the room.
"She just needs to sleep it off," the doctor replied. "Although she aspirated some water, the swift rescue prevented any real damage."
Carter instructed Jeff to see the doctor out while he slipped into the lounge.
Emma was asleep with a deep frown on her face. He gently smoothed out the crease between her brows.
"Boss, the security cameras on the first floor coincidentally malfunctioned for exactly ten minutes."
Jeff had returned after escorting the doctor, bringing the bad news.
