Emma looked up at Carter, utterly bewildered by his words.
"What does Percy have to do with anything?"
Emma had completely forgotten what she'd done while delirious, leading to Carter's massive misunderstanding.
She assumed he was just trying to defend himself.
"It's nothing."
Carter pressed his lips together, not quite brave enough to admit he had aggressively chased Percy off.
Emma didn't get it, but she just reached her arms out to Carter. "My head is throbbing. I must have inhaled a decent amount of ether. Carry me back to the villa, I want to sleep some more."
Her head was pounding and spinning violently; all she wanted was to curl up in a soft bed and sleep.
Seeing her reach out for him like a needy kitten utterly melted him.
The dark gloom that had been hanging over him vanished instantly. Secretly thrilled, Carter scooped her effortlessly into his arms.
"Okay. Get some sleep."
Carter's broad, muscular chest held Emma securely against him.
Breathing in his familiar, comforting scent of ebony and sandalwood, Emma closed her eyes and settled in comfortably.
"The doctor said they only found trace amounts of ether in your system," Carter murmured quietly.
Emma mumbled a sleepy reply. "Impossible. The way I feel right now... I definitely inhaled a massive dose."
Her voice was soft and slurred. Knowing she was absolutely miserable, Carter decided not to push it any further.
Emma slept for nearly a full twenty-four hours, finally waking up completely refreshed around noon the next day.
"I'm starving."
Emma padded barefoot across the carpet, desperate to find something to eat.
As soon as she opened the door, she found Jeff standing guard outside.
"Emma, the boss asked me to wait here. There's food ready downstairs. If you're hungry, I'll have them bring it right up."
Emma nodded frantically. She was so famished she could probably eat an entire horse.
While devouring her food, she looked at Jeff, unable to contain her curiosity. "Did something happen between Carter and Percy yesterday?"
