Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 338

Previously, when Alfred Shaw went to the Harrington family to stand up for Emma, they had immediately agreed to host a formal wedding banquet. The only reason it was delayed was because of the drama surrounding Emma's true parentage.

Emma looked at Carter, a serious light in her eyes.

"Do you want to have one?"

The direct question made Carter hesitate.

Did she not want to go through with it?

It made sense. Outsiders didn't know their marriage was purely a business arrangement, but Emma had always maintained incredibly clear boundaries regarding their partnership.

The fact that she even asked meant she probably didn't want one.

"I'll come up with an excuse to cancel it when we get back."

Carter didn't want to make things difficult for her. He turned his head to hide his disappointment, completely missing the flash of shock in Emma's eyes.

Did he really not want to make their relationship public?

Both of them were lost in their own thoughts on the journey back. The moment they arrived in Capital City, Emma received a call from Jocelyn.

"Emma, Jared's family is landing at the airport in an hour. Could you please pick them up for me? I'm totally swamped."

Jocelyn hadn't been back in the country for years. Now that she had finally resurfaced, every single friend and relative was fighting to book her time.

Emma accepted the errand, and Carter tagged along.

Watching an absolutely massive crowd marching out of the airport terminal, Emma looked at Carter with pure admiration.

"Thank god you had the foresight to arrange a coach bus."

She had assumed it was just a few people, not several dozen.

"The hotel is all sorted, too. I booked two entirely vacant floors. That should be enough space."

Carter had handled everything flawlessly. Emma couldn't help but laugh, "Jocelyn dumped this chore on me, but you ended up doing all the heavy lifting."

"It's nothing."

Carter's overly polite response irritated Emma slightly.

Why was he suddenly acting so weird and distant?

She wasn't used to him being so standoffish, and a totally unprovoked spark of anger flared up inside her.

Right on cue, Jared's family strode over.

"You must be Jocelyn's friend, right? Well, aren't you a whole lot prettier than she is."
