After several hours, finally Markus bid farewell to Alpha Ben. The hours spent in the pack had taken their toll on him, leaving him emotionally and physically drained. Climbing into the car, he closed, his eyes, a horrible headache plaguing his mind.

“Drive towards the royal castle,” he instructed his guards, his voice barely a whisper as his head was pulsating in agony.

The car convoy moved steadily, crossing the border into the royal territory. The familiar landscape did little to ease the turmoil within him. As they neared the heart of the royal territory, Markus spoke up. “Stop the car. Let me out. I need to shift and return by myself. You are free for today. Go back to your families and rest. Thank you for your dedication and support.”

The guards, accustomed to their king’s need for solitude, complied without question. Markus stepped out, inhaling the crisp night air. Once in the wild, he allowed his wolf to take over. The transformation was swift, and soon he was bounding through the forest, releasing all his pent-up anger and heartbreak. His howls echoed through the trees, a haunting sound of pain and sorrow.

Hours passed in a blur of running and howling. Exhausted, Markus finally collapsed near the royal lake, a strong wave of sadness engulfing him. Despite being an experienced wolf, almost a century old, today’s events have shattered his soul. He lay there, reflecting on the deception he had encountered. Despite being in his wolf form, his inner beast was unusually silent, and Markus realized that he was hurt and in pain. Instead of talking to him, he decided to give him space and when he was ready, they would be there for each other. Compared with the other werewolves, he and his wolf had a very unusual relationship, in the majority of cases reaching understanding only from feelings, and not necessarily talking to each other. They were always in sync, without stupid arguments or fighting with each other.

Alena’s actions and behavior were still hard for him to believe. The woman he had waited for to become his queen had proven to be utterly despicable. How could someone be so power-hungry that they would sacrifice their own flesh and blood? The thought sickened him. When she met him, she had immediately thrown Alex under the bus, seeing a better opportunity to become queen. It was horrifying to realize the extent of her ambition and lack of loyalty.

Despite his calm and calculated nature, Markus couldn’t help but feel a grim satisfaction that Alena had received her punishment in an unexpected way. In a cruel twist of fate, she had been punished not only by the pack but also by the Moon Goddess herself. Demoted to an omega within the pack, she had also lost her blessed white wolf after the second rejection, leaving her as nothing more than a simple human.

When Markus finally made his way back to the royal castle, he was greeted by his father, the former king, whose face was a serious frown.

“Can we talk?” his father asked.

Markus nodded in agreement and followed him inside. They settled into Markus’ private office and Markus took a long breath and began to recount everything that had transpired at the Black Forest Pack. His father’s expression shifted from shock, to anger and, in the end, to profound sadness.
