If I were you, I'd head back to the Sterling estate right now, repent, atone for your sins, and beg the elders for forgiveness instead of making a fool of yourself here."

Summer smiled faintly. "Julian, if I were you, I'd go back right now, wag my tail, and cling to the Outsider's leg. I'd grovel, ask how he's doing, and suck up to him, instead of barking like a rabid dog in the hallway."

The fury in Julian's chest shot straight to his head. "Summer, you are totally unhinged! I gave you good advice out of the kindness of my heart, and you mock me? Who the hell do you think you are? Some piece of trash from a small town. If you hadn't latched onto Xavier, do you really think I'd ever spare you a second glance? Or waste a single breath on you?"

Summer stepped back in disgust. "Then please, stop looking at me and stop talking to me. Stay far away. I hear stupidity is contagious."

"Summer, I usually don't hit women, but I'm tempted to make an exception today!" Julian seethed, grinding his teeth. The last time they were in Xavier's office, he had suspected she was subtly insulting him.

Sure enough, the woman wasn't pretending anymore.

Summer tightened her grip on her box, completely on guard. If Julian dared to make a move, she'd smash the box right into him.

"Whose side are you on?!" Julian roared.

Miles patted his shoulder reassuringly before turning to Summer. "Would you like me to go in and let Xavier know you're here?"

"No need." Summer turned on her heel and walked away.

If he wouldn't see her, fine. Who cared?
