Sarah stood in front of the elevator, freezing when she saw the sharp-featured man in the tailored suit.
It was him.
She had only seen his profile in the clinic that morning, but standing this close, she recognized him instantly.
"Going up?" Killian's smooth, unreadable voice broke the momentary silence.
Snapping out of her daze, Sarah quickly stepped into the elevator and leaned over to press the button for the fourth floor.
Killian was standing right next to the panel. As she reached across him, the faint scent of his masculine, woodsy cologne washed over her. It was crisp and commanding, making her pulse inexplicably jump.
He had been lying face down during his treatment, so she hadn't noticed much about his presence. But trapped in this confined space, the sheer weight of the man's aura was intensely intimidating.
Thankfully, the fourth floor wasn't far, and the elevator chimed almost immediately.
Relieved, Sarah stepped out into the hallway.
She had realized her keys were missing when she was in the cab, forcing her to turn back.
Without them, she couldn't get into her apartment, let alone her office desk and medical cabinets at work.
She retraced her steps to the private dining room where she had confronted Jared, but couldn't find them anywhere. Frustrated, she headed back down to the main floor to find the waitress who had been working their room, hoping they had been turned in.
Meanwhile, Killian and his entourage arrived on the sixth floor. Several men and women were already seated around a massive dining table.
Most of the men were local business owners Frank had brought in through city investments. They were deep in conversation until the door opened.
Killian walked straight to the seat of honor, with Frank practically diving into the chair to his left.
The moment Killian sat down, a young woman seated to his right quickly stood up. She grabbed the ornate teapot, flashing a brilliant smile as she leaned in to serve him.
Her perfume was suffocatingly sweet, an aggressive floral scent that immediately set Killian on edge.
"I can manage, thank you," Killian said, raising a hand to stop her.
The young woman froze, her smile cracking at the edges. Defeated, she set the teapot down and sank back into her chair.
Frank quickly jumped in to smooth things over. "Allow me to introduce my niece, Fiona Foster. She works in administration over at Lakeside General Hospital."
