She had rented a small apartment near the hospital and completely cut ties.
"Where are you?!" Samuel demanded through the phone, his voice frantic and carrying a dictatorial edge. "Get to your hospital's ER right now! Your sister was admitted because of you! Get over here immediately!"
Sarah's brow furrowed, a cold laugh bubbling in her chest.
Samantha must have rushed crying to their father to spin another web of lies.
Otherwise, Samuel wouldn't be screaming like a madman.
Samantha was the precious princess who could do no wrong. And Sarah? Sarah was just the disposable punching bag he could summon whenever he felt like it.
Her voice was terrifyingly calm, armed with an unshakeable finality. "I'm going to sleep. There are doctors and nurses on duty at the ER."
"What did you just say?!" Samuel roared, his anger exploding through the speaker. "Have you lost your mind? She is your sister! She's lying in a hospital bed suffering, and you have the nerve to go to sleep? I'm telling you, get your ass over here right now!"
"Why exactly do I have to be there?" Sarah shot back, her tone dripping with biting sarcasm. "I'm not her mother, and I'm not her doctor. I have no obligation to drop everything for her."
"Are you talking back to me?!" Samuel was practically hyperventilating with rage. "You have ten minutes to get here, or you will regret it!"
Sarah let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Regret it? I've been taking care of myself my entire life."
Samuel's voice dropped into a venomous threat. "If you ever want to work at that hospital again, you will come here tonight. I have plenty of ways to make sure you lose your career."
He sounded more like a mob boss than a father.
Sarah gripped the phone, her knuckles turning white as a freezing numbness settled over her chest.
