He listened to Mischa’s voice recording more than once, trying to pick up anything off about her voice or what she said, the way she worded things, but there was nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. As much as he wanted there to be something, there just wasn’t.

Kendrick had shaken his head and stated, Face the facts, Anthony, you lost her long ago. Then he placed a single piece of paper on his desk. “This is the proof of it, everyone in the pack got this email bar yourself and Christy.” Kendrick stated, then walked out of his office.

That piece of paper had been the email Mischa had sent out to, he now knew, the entire pack, her saying goodbye to them. Telling them they all knew why she’d left, not to mention her name around himself anymore. She wished them luck and told them they didn’t have to stay, and didn’t have to tell him they were leaving.

She really was gone and never coming back. His eyes moved to that voice recording, and he listened to it once more. She really did want to dissolve their Mate Bond. They’d been together for 23 years, and she was leaving him. No. She had left him.

He’d stared at the email from Alpha Declan Talbot for a long time before responding:

Alpha Declan Talbot, I’ll arrive two days post the full moon on the 27th to discuss things with Mischa. I do not want you to interfere in our discussion. I will not bring Christy with me; I respectfully request a twoday stay inside your pack from the 27th to the 29th so Mischa and I can properly sit and talk things through.

Alpha Anthony Trenery, Night Whispers Pack.

He’d gotten a simple response of Alpha Anthony, there will be no staying inside my pack for you, Mish, nor I want that, you are coming to be rejected, nothing more: the 27th is the only day you will be allowed inside my pack, Alpha Declan.

He’d not been able to argue it, they were not known to each other at all, so he’d not responded. There was no point, he would simply leave here after his allied packs left after the mating ball. It was a long drive, seven and a half to eight hours, with no stops depending on traffic, with stops 10 to 12 hours.

He didn’t want to arrive tired after such a long drive, so he would arrive in the middle of the night, stay in a hotel and go to the pack after breakfast and a night’s sleep. If he could sleep, that was. Though he was more tired now than he had ever been in his life.

Shade was sleeping inside his mind and hadn’t seemed to have woken up since reading Mischa’s diaries. Nothing, it seemed, could wake him. He was on his own from now until, likely they were before Mischa herself, he had a feeling that was the only thing that would rouse his beast right now.

His week had been exhausting and now, as he stood out there on the packhouse front steps with just Kendrick and Dereck, no Luna on his arm; it felt very wrong to him. He’d not had to stand out here alone for over two decades, his eyes moved to the place beside him where Mischa had once stood, and he sighed heavily to himself.

Maybe it would have been better to cancel this mating ball.” He murmured more to himself than to his unit or what was left of it.

And what would you have stated the reason for that, seeing as you insisted on holding it?Kendrick asked almost drearily. Mischa left you and you imprisoned Christy?

Anthony turned and looked at his Beta, there was so much disrespect in that tone that it was boarding on insubordination. Don’t speak to me like that Beta.” He bit out. I’m still the Alpha of this pack, if you don’t like ithe trailed off as he realized just what he was about to say, the very same words Christy had.

It wasn’t just Kendrick that turned and looked at him, but Dereck as well, and they took a step back in unison and then turned and walked away inside the packhouse without so much as a word, and he closed his eyes, as he realized his mistake, he’d been about to state if you don’t like it you can leave. He was about to call them back when heard the allied car coming down the road.

Just freaking great. Now, he was out here alone. How was he supposed to explain that to his allied, no Lunas and no Unit. Though they all knew the Gamma bloodline was gone in full, half of them were now dispersed throughout their allied packs, going to their Mate’s former packs, the other half he didn’t know; likely with Alpha Nicholas still, he supposed.

He watched as Alpha Blake and his unit got out of the lead car and saw them look for his Unit and his Luna, only to have that Alpha shake his head at what he was seeing, though he walked up the steps and greeted him, Anthony, where is your Luna, your unit?he asked directly.

Kendrick and Dereck are inside,” he’d answered. Mischa, is in another pack currently, and Christy. He sighed Is under formal pack punishment for her stupidly severing ties with Alpha Nicholas. He’d answered honestly. I’ve yet to find a Gamma replacement for Paul.As much as he didn’t want to admit it, he couldn’t lie to his allied that was a part of his alliance dealings with them.

Unlikely to get a Gamma to come here with that second Luna of yours still here. Not considering what we heard, she stated about Gammas,” Blake nodded knowingly.

More than insulting,Neil, Blake’s own Gamma, muttered.

Hmm, it was, and I tried to apologize on her behalf. She doesn’t think before she speaks. He muttered to himself and then realized he’d just defended the shewolf once more. He was going to have to watch that, three years of doing it and it was ingrained into him.

Is Mischa in another pack to help sort out the mess Christy made?Blake had asked him.

Not exactly,Anthony commented and motioned for them to follow him, I’ll take you to your rooms and then see to your men myself. He’d told him, only to have the entire unit frown slightly. They knew it was their job to see wolves attending the mating bali to their accommodation.

That one thing told them there were problems here inside the pack, he supposed. He’d had to let it go, couldn’t do much without stating he’d just almost insulted his Beta and Delta in a way he never should have. But their attitude of late was a little on the lax side, he felt. He had been in the Alpha’s office on his own for the past few weeks. They just did their jobs for the pack and then sat around with their Mates.

He’d had almost the exact same conversations with the other Alphas arriving about being out there on his own. Only one hadn’t said anything and neither had his unit, which meant he was expecting it. Kendrick and Dereck had retired to the suites and taken their Mates with them. From what he could feel of their tethers, he knew he’d insulted them and they, he thought, were probably about to leave, felt insulted just like Paul had been but by him and not Christy.

He walked up there and, instead of just walking into the suite like he would have once upon a time,

pressed the doorbell. He could actually feel all four of them were in there. At least they’d retired out of sight and not just sat around the foyer showing they weren’t helping on purpose, though he was certain that was what the allied thought.

Kendrick opened the door and looked at him. Yes, Alpha. He asked where once he’d just state Anthony

I came to apologize, my words downstairs were uncalledfor, and I didn’t mean them,” Anthony stated.

Barely stopped yourself from asking myself and Dereck to leave now, didn’t you!Kendrick nodded, If you want us to, just say the word we’ll pack and go, problem solved.

That is not what I want. I’m overly tired and stressed about many things, even this mating ball is stressful. Anthony sighed and it was. He’d been expecting Mischa to be home by now, only she apparently wasn’t coming back at all.

You sounded just like Christy downstairs. I don’t need nor want to deal with that kind of attitude. I warned you once I wouldn’t, so I have decided not to attend the ball. Letti will not be either, seeing as there is no Luna, technically there is no Luna’s unit, so she and Becca are not required to. Everything I believe is organized for your dinner and the ball.

You don’t really need any of us down there, other than to make yourself look a bit better in the allied eyes, butI think it’s too late for that, don’t you? Seeing as you had two Lunas but now have none on your arm,” Kendrick shrugged. Practically unheard of.”

Everything will be fine with the allied Kendrick. I’ve sorted them all out. I don’t need you to make me look better. You’re part of the leadership of the pack, it’s protocol for you to be there.” Anthony reminded him of what his actual responsibilities were.
