Chapter One Hundred Fourteen
The waiting area felt colder than the battlefield. Quieter. But far more unbearable. Talon sat forward on the edge of the chair, elbows resting on his knees, hands clasped tightly together-so tight his knuckles had turned white. His head was slightly bowed, but his eyes… his eyes never left the hallway where Diana had disappeared. As if staring long enough would bring her back. As if refusing to blink would somehow keep her alive. No one disturbed him. Not at first. Willow stood a few steps away, watching her brother carefully. She had never seen him like this. Not even during war. Not even when their pack had been at risk. This- This was different. This was fear. Raw. Unfiltered. Terrifying. She finally stepped closer, her voice soft but steady.
“Talon…” No response. Not even a glance. She tried again, a little firmer this time.
“Talon, look at me.”
Slowly- Very slowly- he lifted his head. His eyes were red. Not from crying. But from holding it back.
“What happened?” Willow asked quietly. A pause. “Why were the feral rogues targeting Diana?”
Talon didn’t answer. His gaze drifted past her again-back to the hallway. Willow frowned slightly, her voice gaining a bit more urgency.
“And why did you come here without telling us first?” A beat. “You could have called. We could have prepared-”
Still nothing. Talon’s silence wasn’t defiance. It wasn’t anger. It was absence. His mind wasn’t here. Not fully. Damon, leaning against the wall nearby, noticed it too. He straightened slightly, his voice low.
“He’s not going to answer you right now.”
Willow looked at him, frustration flickering. “But we need to know-”
“We will,” Damon cut in gently. “Just not now.” His gaze shifted to Talon. “Right now… he’s somewhere else.
Willow followed his gaze. Back to her brother. And she saw it. He wasn’t hearing them. Not really. Not fully. Inside Talon’s mind-
There was only one thing. Diana. Diana. Her voice. Her smile. Her stubbornness. Her strength. Her laughed when she challenged him. Her eyes when she said his name. And now- Her stillness. Her silence. Just like when she was attacked in Crimson Fang Pack.
Talon’s fingers tightened together. A silent prayer formed in his mind. Not as an Alpha. Not as a King. But
as a mate.
Please… Don’t take her from me. Not her. Not Diana. Take anything else. Take everything else. But not her.
His breathing hitched slightly. He closed his eyes briefly. Then opened them again-Still staring forward. Waiting. Always waiting.
Beside him, Conall shifted uncomfortably but said nothing. Even he, who rarely held his tongue, understood that this was not a moment for words. Time stretched. Minutes turned into something heavier. Longer. Every second dragged. Every heartbeat too loud.

Then The door opened. All four of them stood instantly. Talon didn’t even realize he had moved until he was already halfway across the room. A healer stepped out, her expression calm but serious.
“Alpha King-”
“Is she awake?” Talon cut in immediately, his voice sharp, desperate. “Is she okay? What happened? Why isn’t she-”
“Alpha King.” The healer’s tone didn’t rise. But it held authority. Enough to stop him. Just enough.
“She is alive.”
Silence. It hit them all at once. Heavy. Real.
Talon froze. “…alive?” he repeated, almost like he didn’t trust the word.
The healer nodded.
“She is out of immediate danger.”
The breath that left Talon was not relief. Not fully. But it was something. His shoulders dropped slightly- Just slightly.Behind him, Willow let out a soft breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. Damon’s posture eased a fraction. Conall exhaled quietly. But the healer wasn’t finished.
“She pulled through because she is strong,” the healer continued, her gaze briefly shifting toward Talon. Stronger than most wolves we’ve treated.” A pause. “But this was not a simple injury.”
Talon’s eyes sharpened instantly.
“What do you mean?”
The healer’s expression darkened slightly.
“The wound itself was severe,” she explained. “But that was not what nearly killed her.”
Silence fell again. Then-
“She was poisoned.”
The word dropped like a stone. Willow’s eyes widened.
“Poisoned?” she repeated.
The healer nodded.
“Whatever pierced her body…” she continued, “it carried a toxin.”
Her gaze turned serious.
“A very potent one.”
Damon straightened fully now.
“What kind of toxin?”
The healer shook her head slightly.

A pause.
“But I can tell you this-”
Her eyes moved back to Talon.
“It was strong enough to kill a regular wolf within minutes.”
The room went completely still. Talon’s chest tightened violently. Minutes. Diana had kept running. Fighting. Bleeding. For far longer than that. The healer continued.
“Her body was already fighting the poison when she arrived,” she said. “If she had collapsed any later…”
