Chapter One Hundred Fifty Six
Diana and Talon had been back in Black Howler for an entire week From the moment they crossed the border into Royal Pack territory, they had barely been given a chance to rest. The feral rogues attacked almost every night. Sometimes they came in small groups, slipping through the forest in silence and testing the outer patrols. Other times, they arrived in larger numbers, throwing themselves against Black Howler’s defenses with a mindless desperation that made them even more dangerous.
They did not retreat when wounded. They did not hesitate when surrounded. They fought until they were dead or physically incapable of moving.
But no matter how many came… Black Howler did not fall. The Royal Pack remained strong. Its warriors held every border. Its patrol formations remained disciplined. Its guards rotated regularly so that exhaustion would never become a weakness.
And now that their Alpha King and Luna Queen had returned home, the morale of the entire pack had risen. The fear that had begun spreading through the outer villages disappeared almost immediately.
Talon was once again leading the warriors from the front. Diana stood beside hirn every night, her twin blades moving through the darkness with deadly precision. Sometimes she fought in her human form. Other times, Artemis tore through the feral rogues with silver claws and teeth.
The sight of their Luna Queen charging into battle seemed to give the warriors renewed strength. No attack, no matter how violent, managed to break through their formation. No rogue reached the residential grounds. No pup, elder, or untrained pack member was harmed.
Thorne, however, had not shown himself. Not once. But Diana and Talon knew he was close. They could feel him. It was not the scent of a wolf drifting through the trees. It was something darker. Heavier. A pressure that settled over the forest just before every attack.
Diana often felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise without warning. Talon would suddenly pause and stare into the shadows as Fenrir growled inside him. Neither of them needed to speak. They knew. Thorne was watching. Watching them fight. Watching the warriors respond. Studying every patrol route. Examining every defensive formation. Searching for weakness. Searching for a flaw.
Searching for the smallest opening he could exploit.
But so far… He had found none. Black Howler was not like the smaller packs he had terrorized. It was the Royal Pack. Its warriors had been trained for wars, invasions, rebellions, and rogue uprisings.
And with Talon commanding them and Diana fighting beside them, even the strongest feral attacks barely slowed them down.
Still, Diana knew Thorne had not sent those rogues with the expectation that they would win. They were sacrifices. Disposable bodies thrown at Black Howler so he could observe how the pack responded.
“He’s studying us,” Diana said one evening after another attack had been repelled.
She stood beside Talon at the edge of the forest while warriors removed the bodies of the dead feral rogues. Blood darkened the ground. The faint smell of poison lingered in the air. Talon nodded grimly.
“I know.” Fenrir paced restlessly inside him.

He wants us to become tired,” Talon continued. “He wants us to believe these attacks are the real threat.”
Diana looked toward the darkness beyond the border.
“But they aren’t.”
“No.”
Talon’s eyes narrowed.
“Thorne is waiting.”
“For what?”
“The moment he believes we are distracted.”
Diana’s grip tightened around the handle of one of her blades:
Artemis growled inside her mind.
“He can keep waiting.” Diana agreed.
Because whatever Thorne believed he was learning about Black Howler… He had not yet seen everything.
The Royal Pack-the Black Howler Pack-was not a force that could be easily destroyed. Its warriors were disciplined, its defenses were nearly impenetrable, and its members stood united against every threat. With the Alpha King and Luna Queen leading them, the Royal Pack was stronger than ever and remained the most powerful pack in the entire werewolf world.
The week had not been filled only with battles. Talon and Diana had also received several messages from the Rogue Kingdom.
The first had come from Willow. She and Damon had arrived safely and were already preparing for their marking and mating ceremony. The date had not yet been finalized, but Willow promised to send the official invitations as soon as everything was decided. Diana had smiled from the moment she read the
message.
Talon had pretended to remain calm, but Diana noticed the rellef in his eyes. His younger sister was finally choosing her mate freely.
Not because of the bond. Not because Damon had marked her to save her life. Not because she was already carrying his scent.
Because she wanted him.
Willow had also requested that their mother, Selene, travel to the Rogue Kingdom to help with the preparations. The moment Selene heard the news, she had nearly cried. Then she immediately began listing everything Willow would need.
A ceremonial dress. Flowers. Pack banners. Traditional jewelry. Food for every guest.
Diana had laughed as Selene turned the entire conversation into a planning meeting within minutes. Selene also admitted something that surprised both Talon and Diana.
She had forgiven Damon a long time ago. Not completely, of course. A mother never forgot the pain

caused to her child. But she no longer held the same anger toward him.
“He made mistakes,” Selene had said. “Serious ones.”
She paused before smiling.
“But he loves her. And Willow is not a helpless pup. She is strong. Independent. Stubborn.” Selene had laughed softly.
“If Damon ever forgets his place, my daughter will remind him.”

Talon had muttered something about Damon deserving whatever Willow did to him. Diana had agreed.
“Just like her mother,” Rowan said, a proud smile spreading across his face as he watched Talon. He slipped an arm around his mate’s waist and gently squeezed her hand. “We raised good pups, my love. Strong, compassionate, and honorable. They may have grown into an Alpha King and a future Queen, but they’ll always be our little ones. Looking at them now, I couldn’t be prouder of the wolves they’ve become.”

Another report arrived from Damon himself. It explained what had happened during their journey from Stone Claw to the Rogue Kingdom. The Elders’ concern had come true. They had been attacked by feral rogues. What the Elders did not know… Was that Damon had expected it.
