The Silver Wolf (Diana and Talon) novel Chapter 198

Chapter One Hundred Ninety Eight

The healer approached Diana.

“Was your wolf the one who told you?”

Diana frowned.

“No.”

The healer stopped.

“No?”

“Artemis did not tell me.”

Diana’s expression became thoughtful.

“I do not think she knew either.”

The healer’s brows furrowed.

“That is unusual.”

Inside Diana’s mind, Artemis suddenly went very still. Then her voice came quietly.

“I did not know.”

Diana immediately felt the guilt coming through their connection. Artemis lowered herself inside their shared space. Her silver ears flattened against her head.

“I did not notice our pup.”

Diana’s heart tightened.

“Artemis…”

“What kind of mother wolf does not know she is carrying a pup?”

The sadness in Artemis’s voice broke something inside Diana.

“You are not a failure.”

“I should have known.”

“You could not know something neither of us noticed.”

“I am your wolf.”

“Yes.”

“I am supposed to feel everything happening inside our body.”

“Artemis.”

Diana’s voice became firmer inside their mind.

“Listen to me.”

Her wolf reluctantly-lifted her head.

“You are not a failure.”

“But-”

“No.”

Diana cut her off.

“We have been dealing with constant attacks. Thorne. Poison. Stone Claw. Vanessa. Rafe. The Rogue Kingdom. We barely had time to breathe.”

She softened.

“And maybe this is part of being a Silver Wolf.”

Artemis listened.

“Maybe because your power immediately began protecting the pup, you did not recognize what was happening. Maybe you thought the changes in your body were because of the poison.”

Artemis considered that. Diana continued.

“You were already protecting our pup before you even knew the pup existed.”

That made Artemis pause.

“You pushed the poison out. You kept us alive. You kept the pup alive.”

Diana smiled inside their shared mind.

“That does not sound like a failure to me.”

Artemis’s ears slowly lifted.

“We protected the pup.”

“Yes.”

“We kept our pup safe.”

“Yes.”

A little pride entered Artemis’s posture.

“We are already a good mother.”

Diana laughed inwardly.

“Yes, Artemis.”

Then Artemis suddenly became smug

“We will be the best mother.”

“There she is.”

Outside their shared mind, the healer was still waiting for Diana’s answer. Diana realized she had been quiet for several seconds.

“No,” she repeated. “Artemis did not know.”

The healer looked thoughtful.

“That is uncommon, but not impossible.”

Talon immediately became alert.

“What do you mean?”

The healer looked toward him.

Claim

“Normally, the female wolf notices pregnancy very early. Sometimes even before the human side does. She may sense the second heartbeat. Or notice changes in the female’s scent. But there are circumstances that can make detection more difficult.”

“Such as?”

“Extreme stress.”

The healer began listing possibilities.

“Recent injury. Poison. Repeated shifting. Physical exhaustion. Changes in magical or wolf energy.”

Diana and Talon exchanged a look. They had experienced nearly everything on that list. The healer continued.

“And Luna Diana is not an ordinary wolf.”

Artemis immediately puffed her chest.

“We are extraordinary.”

Diana ignored her. The healer smiled slightly.

“We do not fully understand how Silver Wolf pregnancies differ from ordinary wolf pregnancies. That could also explain why Artemis did not immediately recognize the pup.”

Diana felt relief move through their bond. Artemis relaxed completely. Talon glanced toward Diana.

“We did not know either.”

His voice became thoughtful.

“A lot has happened recently.”

Diana looked at him with surprise. Talon continued.

“We were focused on protecting the pack. Then Stone Claw happened. Vanessa. Rafe. Traveling to the Rogue Kingdom. The attacks. Thorne.”

He shook his head.

“Neither of us noticed.”

Diana stared at him. She had just said almost the exact same thing to Artemis. Her lips slowly curved into a smile. Talon noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You are smiling at me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Diana shook her head.

“I was just telling Artemis the exact same thing.”

Talon smiled.

“Of course you were.”

Diana looked at him warmly. He truly was her mate.

Sometimes it frightened her how closely their thoughts aligned without either of them trying. She felt the same fears he felt. He understood her instincts. Even when they argued, their conclusions often ended in the same place.

She reached for his hand again. Talon immediately intertwined their fingers. The healer watched them with quiet amusement.

Then she gestured toward the examination bed.

“Well… Since everyone has agreed that no one failed to notice anything deliberately…”

Diana laughed softly.

“…shall we confirm whether the Royal Pack truly has a future little pup on the way?”

Talon immediately straightened.

“Yes.”

Diana raised an eyebrow. The healer laughed.

“I believe that answer came from both the Alpha King and Fenrir.”

“It did.”

Talon helped Diana onto the examination bed. She gave him a warning look.

“I know.”

“Then stop acting like I am made of glass.”

“I am not.”

“You practically lifted me.?

“I assisted.”
