Chapter One Hundred Ninety Nine

“Now,” the healer said with a warm smile, “let us see how our little wolf pup is doing.”

Diana’s expression softened immediately. The healer gestured toward the examination bed.

“Luna, please lie down. I want to check both you and the pup properly.”

Diana was already moving to stand from her chair when Talon immediately reached out and offered both hands to help her.

She stopped. Slowly, she looked at his outstretched hands. Then she looked at him. Talon smiled innocently. Diana rolled her eyes.

“I can stand on my own, Talon.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you acting like I suddenly forgot how?”

“I am not.”

“You are.”

“I am simply helping my pregnant mate.”

“You found out I was pregnant less than a day ago and you are already impossible.”

Talon’s smile widened.

“You should expect worse.”

Inside his mind, Fenrir immediately agreed.

“We should carry mate.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she will probably hit us.”

Fenrir considered that.

“She would not hit us while carrying our pup.”

Talon almost laughed.

“You want to test that theory?”

Fenrir immediately became quiet. Diana finally placed her hands in Talon’s and allowed him to help her stand.

“There,” Talon said proudly. “Was that so terrible?”

Yes.”

“You are lying.”

“Maybe.”

The healer turned away to hide her smile. Diana walked toward the examination bed, but Talon remained close enough that his arm nearly touched hers the entire time. When she climbed onto the bed, he immediately adjusted the pillow behind her.

“Talon.”

“What?”

“I am going to lie down, not spend the night here.”

“You should be comfortable.”

“I am comfortable.”

“You could be more comfortable.”

Diana gave him a look. Talon stopped touching the pillows. For now. Inside Diana’s mind, Artemis laughed.

“I like this.”

“Of course you do.”

“He is taking good care of us.”

“He is hovering.”

“He is loving us.”

“That too.”

Once Diana was lying comfortably on her back, the healer moved beside her. Talon remained on the other side of the bed. He took Diana’s hand immediately. She looked at their joined fingers and smiled. For all her complaints about his hovering, she understood why he was doing it. He was nervous. So was she.

They had only learned a few hours earlier that she was carrying their pup. Until Ravenna revealed it, neither Diana nor Artemis had noticed. And now they were about to see whether Ravenna was truly correct. Whether there was really a little life growing inside her.

The healer gently placed both hands over Diana’s still-flat stomach.

“Try to relax, Luna.”

“I am relaxed.”

Talon immediately answered, “She is not.”

Diana turned her head sharply.

“Talon.”

The healer laughed.

“Alpha, perhaps you are the one who needs to relax.”

Diana smiled triumphantly.

“I like her.”

Talon ignored both of them. He focused on the healer’s hands.

“What are you going to do?”

Clem

“This is an old healer’s ritual,” the woman explained. “It allows us to see the life energy of an unborn pup.”

“Will it hurt her?”

“No.”

“The pup?”

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

The healer looked at Talon patiently.

“I have performed this ritual many times, Alpha.”

Diana squeezed his hand.

“My love.”

He looked at her.

“Let her work.”

Talon finally nodded. But his gaze remained fixed on Diana. The healer closed her eyes. Her breathing slowed.

Then she whispered words neither Diana nor Talon recognized. The language sounded ancient. Older than the pack. Older than many of the traditions still practiced by wolves. The healer repeated the phrase several times.

Then a faint glow appeared beneath her palms.

Diana inhaled sharply. Talon’s fingers tightened around hers. A thin mist began rising from Diana’s stomach. At first, it looked like nothing more than white smoke. It floated above her body, moving slowly through the air. Diana stared at it.

“What is happening?”

“Wait,” the healer whispered.

The mist thickened. Then began to change. Slowly, the shapeless cloud condensed. Four tiny legs appeared. Then a small head. A tail. Ears. Diana stopped breathing. The mist had taken the shape of a tiny

wolf pup. It was incredibly small. Barely larger than Talon’s hand. But the little pup moved. It stretched. Then shook its body. Talon stared in complete amazement.

Fenrir went silent. Completely silent. For perhaps the first time in Talon’s life, his wolf had no words.

“Our pup,” Talon whispered.

Tears filled Diana’s eyes. Artemis’s presence surged inside her.

“Our baby.”

The tiny mist pup began walking across the air as though there were an invisible floor beneath its paws. It turned toward Diana. Then toward Talon. Diana laughed softly through her tears.

“Oh, Goddess.”

Talon’s eyes were shining. He looked as though someone had placed the entire world in front of him.

“That is our pup.”

Diana squeezed his hand.

“Yes.”

Then something else happened. The mist shifted again. A second shape began forming behind the first.

Diana frowned.

“Talon…”

“I see it.”

Another head appeared. Another set of tiny paws. Another tail. The second mist pup stepped forward. The room became completely silent.

Two pups. Two tiny wolves. They began running around the examination room, circling each other playfully as though chasing invisible tails.

Diana stared. Talon stared. Even the healer looked pleased. The two pups raced around once. Twice. Then both stopped.

They turned. And together, they walked toward Diana and Talon. One stood near Diana. The other stopped near Talon.

For several beautiful seconds, the two mist pups simply looked at them. Diana’s tears fell freely now.
