Whether Jevon's final warning actually played a role was impossible to tell.
But once she was taken in, she was subjected only to standard questioning before being placed in a holding cell.
She received three meals a day right on schedule.
No one went out of their way to make her life difficult.
On the third day, a lawyer finally came to see her.
"I was hired by Yves Walden to review your case," the lawyer explained. "I'm officially representing you now. He asked me to tell you not to be afraid, and that he will do everything in his power to get you out."
She simply nodded.
She had nothing else to say to the attorney.
After the lawyer left, several more days dragged by.
Finally, the heavy door swung open. "The investigation into the accident has been concluded. You are free to go."
Stepping out of the precinct and onto the sidewalk, she smelled the faint scent of flowers and felt the warmth of the sun on her skin.
Yorath's car was parked idling on the curb.
Soren had clearly been waiting for a while. Seeing her emerge, he stepped forward and gave a polite nod. "Ms. Sewell. He is in the car."
She walked over, and Soren pulled the rear door open, revealing Yorath sitting in the back seat.
He was dressed simply in a white crew-neck t-shirt and black slacks.
The sleeves were pushed up to his elbows, exposing his lean, muscular forearms.
On his wrist sat a cheap black watch that clashed violently with his usual aristocratic aura.
She suddenly remembered—she had bought that watch for him.
It was for his first birthday they spent together.
She had been nineteen, freshly signed to his agency, and completely broke.
She had lived frugally for a year just to save a couple thousand dollars to buy it for him.
When she gave it to him, his wealthy friends had laughed so hard they were practically rolling on the floor.
Back then, she was young and naive, unable to understand what was so funny.
He had never worn it once.
Yet here he was, wearing it today.
She climbed into the car and sat beside him.
His familiar, dark cologne seemed much fainter than usual.
He had lost weight, making his sharp features look even more pronounced and dangerously attractive.
He offered a faint smile. "Were you scared?"
